I had discussion with my mate Funderstixxx on Blackpool beach about this t'other week - we were discussing what would happen if the Earth was a cube, and what would happen when you got to the edge and had to get to the next face, and the fact you could actually reach the horizon.....

because most of the earth is liquid (far beneath the surface its all molten) and so gravity draws it to the same distance from the center. if there were any "sticky up" points or gaps in the frame, the liquid fills them so it will become a spere anyway.

its not totally round because it bulges at the equator where the centrifugal force appears to pull objects outwards as they are spun.

eg. jupiter spins at a faster rate so it bulges more
