There was a period (no pun intended) where every female comedian had exactly the same jokes. Sexism countering sexism, making men the butt of the jokes, and those were the comedians who people wanted to see.

In turn, these were the only female comedians who the public saw (on TV) and as a lot of men didn't find the jokes funny, the stereotype that female comedians aren't funny came about - I think DTJ is right as its much better now, but there are still a lot who stick to the same old shtick which can be pretty tedious if its not done well (same problems with minority comedians).

Katherine Ryan's pretty good too. I possibly wouldn't have been as bothered about seeing Sarah Millican if she was in our bigger auditorium, but the smallest one is a great venue to see comedians trying out new material and warming up. Dylan Moran, Jimmy Carr and Peter Kay have all used it as their warm-up venue for bigger tours now. I always try to take the opportunity to see comedians here before they move onto arenas - I don't watch arena comedy. But I'm very lucky in that I get first dibs on tickets (although I usually still have to pay!)

Richard Prior was a genius, he's the only reason to watch Superman III whilst half cut (he was clearly taking the piss in that film)
