The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

No, that's a bed. The one I'm thinking of is the main show theme, played by an orchestra.

Ahhh okay, my bad!

Another example of having too much time on my hands, I ripped the up to news bed and mixed in the pips in Audition...

Does anyone else think that sounds like Psychedelic Furs "Pretty in Pink" - it's the beat and the chords

maybe it's just me

It's that, but I'm sure you can get it without the jingle singers.

Oh God. Please, I beg you Chris, do NOT use the Birthday-show slash Classical-type version of the Show Close Theme on the last show. I WILL BAWL MY EYES OUT SO MUCH...
...Not that I won't be already, being the emotional guy with the stereotypical woman's emotional range already, but it won't help. Just like the music in the leaving speech was the first thing to set me off. >.>

It has been inevitable from day one. I'm fairly releaved actually as I never though Chris was his best on Breakfast even though he would have been a fool not to have taken it on, hell I'd take it on if it was offered to me. But I just hope we can have the old Chris back, the Chris from Saturday mornings just simply having a laugh with his mate Dave (and just Dave, not half of fecking Radio 1), on the airwaves with no pressure on him. It was just spontaneous back then, you never knew quite what was going to happen. One minute they're doing a feature they just dreamed up called Who's in the Doghouse, the next Comedy Dave is singing a song about cheese. It was the best show ever, and that was the time I fell in love with radio, and I followed Chris ever since. But Chris on the breakfast show never quite did it for me, it always felt too scripted, and there was far too much input from other team members. Hopefully he'll get a Saturday morning slot back and we can revisit times of old.

I do agree with most of that, I do prefer his afternoon and Saturday's stuff better than Breakfast. But I don't think his morning work was ever scripted, he may not of been given as much free reign maybe, after all its the flagship show and some stuff may not work on a morning.
I just felt the decline started last year and got worse this year.

I do know that there is a volunteer hospital radio station at my local(ish, to where I used to live) hospital, I've been on the fence of actually calling and saying I want to help. But, with being like Aled Haydn-Jones as my aspiration, I've decided I am going to contact them sometime soon and go along and check it out. I've decided I want to go into producing as a career! ^_^

Another lurker here - I am still sad over this news :(

Thought I'd give it a few days before I posted, mostly because I was getting angry over the newspaper stuff (but I suppose they want to try and do as much damage as possible while there is blood in the water).

The team have bought much joy to me other the years, I'll be sad to see them 'move on', but hopefully it'll work out great for them! I'll see where Chris ends up and follow ;)

While I am here, thank you for running this site :)

Back to lurking!

It would be nice if some of the people who've registered in the last two days stick around. We are a small community but there's always room for more people. As long as they don't give me any trouble mind ;)

Agreed. Some of the posts from the newbies this week have been fantastic. We could really do with them sticking around.

I had a PM from someone worried that the site or forum would be closing. Rest assured, they are not! This site existed several years before the breakfast show and it'll continue to exist afterwards. As long as Chris is working, there will be stuff to discuss. Not to mention the fact that there is loads of archive material still to catalogue and upload - there should always be a reason to visit.

I thought paging though some topics here (it's been a while) and reminding myself of some show memories would make me feel better but I have to say I’m now even more sad that I’ll soon be losing my morning friends. I’m the self-proclaimed biggest fan of the show here in America (at least in the east, I’ve heard their discussions about the CA fan that listens each night in real time)
I discovered Chris and Co. on Sirius back in ’08 and have been laughing every morning since. When Sirius dropped BBC1 last August that was a major trauma. Thankfully, someone in the fb “Get BBC1 back on Sirius” group lead me to the Tune In Radio app for my iPhone and all was made right again. I set my phone each night to record in real time and listen on my commute in each morning and throughout the day. Sadly, no app will stop my mornings from sucking starting in September.

I’ve been thinking a lot since the announcement about all the best moments and reading the best moment thread and still laugh. Also, clips like “…give me an olive, give me an olive!!!”; Carrie under the table every Tuesday; any Alan Carr visit; Patty McGuiness’ stories; Noel’s story of dogs in hats or their heads out car window; the R2D2 projector; any of Dave’s games or sweepstakes explanations, "Monkey Man"; "Love you Daddy!!… The list is endless and I can’t imagine how many genius moments I have forgotten. I plan to listen to Aled’s surgery this Sunday and may just need to call in just to represent the .000001% of us here in the States that are as devastated as everyone here from the UK is. Just had to remind everyone that the ripples of this are wide and thank all here who help to keep this place as a resource for great memories.

Will try not to cause trouble - I'll even wipe the seat if I use the site facilities, and try not to hum too many songs about Cheese.

That Chris would have to end his run on the breakfast show at some indefinite point in the future? I'd say that was a given, as what would be the alternative option? Having said that, I spent some of today wallowing in R1 nostalgia by re-reading Mark Radcliffe's brilliant book 'Thank You For The Days', and in the chapter 'The Day I Got Sacked From Radio 1' he talks about Mark and Lard's ill-fated stint in the breakfast slot and says 'Occasionally, though, you just know you have made a mistake from the very beginning and I honestly knew from the end of that very first show that it was never going to work'. So your quote would probably have been quite apt there! I'd highly recommend that book to any R1 geeks by the way, even if you are too young to remember Mark and Lard or just didn't listen to them, it's a really funny read.

I do agree with you in that I will always prefer the old afternoon show to the current CMS, but that doesn't mean that I'll be any less sorry about it ending come September.

I love that Mark Radcliffe book. I think his next one is gonna be the next book I buy for my Kindle.

Another excellent book I can recommend for the Radio 1 geek is Simon Garfield's The Nation's Favourite. It was also made into a TV programme, I think it was last on the telly on the 40th anniversary of Radio 1 and it might be on YouTube.

It was published in the late 1990s, so Moyles is not mentioned much in it, but it's still a great read.

It is a real gem, and Chunky Rhys of 'I Blame Rhys' fame gets plenty of mentions, although those were the days before he'd joined the R1 Fun Police of course.

Is he bringing out another one soon then? I have 'Showbusiness:The Diary of Rock 'N Roll Nobody', which I did enjoy, but not as much as 'Thank You For The Days', and have never read 'Nothern Sky'.

Oh and I would also encourage some of the newly registered people to stay around. Lots of the posts over the last few days, whether they've been from people in Latvia, Poland, the U.S. or just the plain old U.K. have been really interesting (and a bit sad) to read. It is amazing to hear just how much the show has meant to so many people in so many different places.

Yeah, that's the bugger. I actually didn't really enjoy Northern Sky, just didn't click with me. Geek fact: a couple years ago Marc Riley had asked for some guest tickets for a show we had on, and knowing that I was a fan my manager passed it to me to organise, so for a brief time I had his mobile number in my phone. I'm so sad :)

Yep, he's managed to put to words a lot of what I'm thinking. I also realised I'm gonna really miss all the Christmas jingles and Dominic the donkey :(
