The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

There's a possibility of me going to London this July (for the World Pride).

I want to add a couple of days afterwards to see some sights including Radio 1.
For those who have been there, what did you do? Just stand outside and take a couple of pics? Trying to speak to CMS members? Visiting the cafe? Annoy Claire at reception? Is there some kind of tour one can do? :D

TIA!

Having been there myself, I think you can stand outside the front doors no problem. This will mean you can probably pounce on any famous people arriving or leaving. Although, from my experience, its not exactly a Celeb's favorite thing ever, but hey-ho. As regards getting into the building, that may be a different story. I may be wrong, but assuming R1 is a place of work just like any other, you can't really arrive at reception and just tell them you want to have a look around, doesn't work like that.

The building itself is very understated and pretty dull. You have to look hard to notice anythng saying R1 on it.

The cafe next door is good for food and a nice sit and chat - plus if you are there at around 10:15 you may well see Chris, although again a MASSIVE fan of being accosted in the street (see my Sig).

Or, BabeStation offices are next door but one to R1 building - you may well find Dom lurking there*...

* I'm joking, of course, Mrs Byrne.

I am going to be in London in the summer and was thinking of going to R1 in the hope of meeting Chris, but I remember you saying that when you met him he looked a bit peed off (or something similar) when he saw you approaching, and that put me off a bit. I wouldnt want to annoy him, but he sometimes mentions that people turn up to see him when he pops out for a ciggy and he doesnt seem to mind that, so maybe he tolerates it more when the show is on as he is still in 'work mode' maybe?

Do not under any circumstances try to approach Chris at 6.30am when he's just turning up for work.I made that mistake once...

No, he has made that abundantly clear on-air a few times. What happened with you?

I have absolutely no doubt that you would do something like that.

At 6:29 and 30 seconds ( :) ) when you head into work would not be the best time for anybody to approach anybody, If your famous or not. Chris is just being a normal grumpy morning person. But fair play for even attemping it in the first place.

Thank you for the replies!

I don't intend on going up to anyone and talk to them. I just want to see it (well, that doesn't sound creepy at all) and if I happen to see Chris or Aled or Dave or Dom or Tina or Freya or Matt, I'd be overjoyed but I wouldn't approach them.

It might be best in the long run that you do go up to them if you see em. The last thing you'd want them to think is "Who's that freak over the other side of the road clapping madly and cheering while jumping up 'n' down with a long lens camera?" :-)

Chris has very great appreciation of 'the listener' as a collective, but 'the listener' as an individual - much less so.

But, I knew this, and didn't really care. Me thrusting myself upon him (no, not like that) and offering a hand to shake was all about me meeting a hero, not him meeting me. I did my best to wait for a suitable opening, but its still not easy - and yes, there was a definate dropping of the face as soon as he'd clocked me and my plan. Tough, shouldn'ta been so ruddy funny for so many years - no one would care about meeting him then; his fault not mine.

I wouldn't worry about annoying him if you do try it, gotta take rough with smooth and all that, just don't expect him to be all bouncy and as pleased to meet you as you are him!

Dave walked past me in reception looking grumpy - so I thought it best to leave him be. He's not keen on cm.net as a whole - so explaining why I was there wouldn't have helped...

Exactly, he clearly wasn't enamoured with me after I told him I was from here!

Some people who are in the limelight really hate the attention from the general public and find it hard to deal with. A lot of actors/entertainers are very shy people deep down. The famous people I have met have always been a bit timid and standoffish apart from Jeremy Kyle who is an absolute douchebag and overly friendly.

I've met loads through work and they're almost always lovely (apart from the odd one *cough*Nigel Havers*cough*), but that's a different context, cos you're not approaching them as a 'fan'.

I have heard David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst both say that what they do is just a job - albeit a very enjoyable one. They would prefer not to have the attention and I completely understand that.

The way I would look at it is if a fan from the largest fan site dedicated to you approached me I'd want to give them more time and give them a better experience but everybody is different.

Meh, what can ya do. I don't regret going to meet Dave, but maybe if I did it again I wouldn't mention that I was from here :)

Dave wasn't particularly enthusiastic when I told him I was from here, but he didn't seem to have a problem with it and he seemed like a very nice bloke. And he sent me a nice message on twitter as well, so I definitely don't regret meeting him.

I think a lot of it when meeting famous people is about when you meet them. If they are working or in their working environment you may get a better reaction as they are more likely to be compliant.

I frequently see footballers in Tesco but I have only ever spoken to one of them as they are in their own time and I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it. But I have seen loads of famous people at work and I have only ever heard bad things about a couple of them.

Dave is a genuinely nice bloke. You can tell that by the way he talks to people on twitter
