It wouldn't be tax free, it would be a benefit in kind, and therefore taxed and NI'd just the same as salary. Unless you only lived in it when you were on the Job/on call. Oh unless you are a Tax inspector and then you can set up a Company, and claim your spare room as an office, and get to set off loads of home expences directly against your earnings! (you can do this, even if you are not a tax inspector, but then they have all sorts of other rules that apply to prove your badges of trade)
