The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Why is the Chris Moyles show still persisting with the whole Podcast- free download situation? It was mildly amusing at first but it's just outright irritating. No other show has made the switch but yet Aled or the show or whom ever still insists on it. I'm sure it's a trivial issue but it doesn't stop it from being annoying.

Has there been a change in other shows that I'm missing or is it still only the CM show?

No. As they discussed at length on the show, some parts of the BBC have decided in their wisdom that people don't know what a podcast is or how it works and they'll get more listeners by using the term 'free download'.

Don't care if it is called a free download, I will always use the term podcast. I think the people in BBC that said what Nicola stated about not knowing is stupid since the term podcast has been used since 2005 and all of a sudden they decide to change it 6 years later.

I agree. New things come out all the time. People either learn what they are or don't. Changing the name of something half a decade after its conception is bonkers.

I'm sure there must be some people out there somewhere who dunny know what a 'Microwave' is, but changing its name to 'magic food heating box' is not the solution for this (probably very small) collective of idiots.

A podcast is a podcast, you'll either get it or you don't. If you understand the concept - the name is immaterial.

I think I will now change its name to "magic food heating box". When I'm not calling it a popty ping that is.

We had this discussion before, and Aled insisted that their research indicated that tons of people didn't know what a podcast was, and download figures had increased substantially since they switched to free download, so who knows. Personally I prefer to continue calling it the Geoff.

Hoover > Vacuum Cleaner
Coke > Pepsi
Tannoy > PA System
Podcast > Free Download.

Plus 'free download' is more confusing. If anything it should be 'audio download'. There are loads of things which are free and can be downloaded online, ranging from software to images.

is this meant to be a list of things which have changed their names?!!!

Podcast was coined by Apple though, and a lot of people associate 'pod' with 'iPod'.

Wiki says...
It is a portmanteau of the words "pod"— from iPod —and "broadcasting". Despite the etymology, the content can be accessed using any computer that can play media files and not just portable music players.
So technically the name is misleading and has been helped by it's colloquial use and prevalence.

Dimtim - It's a comparison of things which are known by other names despite being something else that's similar. I just meant to make the point that you can try to stop people saying one thing, but ultimately they'll resort to the word they're more comfortable with.

That's probably the best proposition Chrysostom has had for ages.

True. TWiT.tv is a huge player in the Podcast business and they tried since the early days, 2006, to change it to Netcast and they got nowhere. It is a free download... of a podcast.

Person 1: The Chris Moyles Show has a free download.
Person 2: What is it, desktop wallpaper?
Person 1: No a Podcast.

Explain that to Aled will you? He listens to you.

Nope. Apple did not invent or name the podcast. Adam Curry (former MTV VJ, living in the UK at the time, I think) invented the podcast and Dannie Gregoire came up with the name:

"Origin of podcasting

By 2003, a number of blogs already published audio online, and the RSS file format was widely used for summarizing or syndicating content. Using RSS, former NPR host Christopher Lydon attached audio files to his weblog. Lydon's full-length interviews, which focused on blogging and coverage of the 2004 U.S. presidental campaigns, helped to inspire Adam Curry's iPodder script. Indeed, blogs would become an important factor in the popularization of podcasting.

One of the first uses of the term "podcasting" was in an article in The Guardian [1] (http://www.guardian.co.uk/online/story/ ... 89,00.html) on February 12, 2004, though it didn't detail the RSS file format or automatic synchronization. In September of that year, Dannie Gregoire used the term to describe the automatic download and synchronization idea that Adam Curry had developed [2] (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ipodder-dev/message/41). Gregoire had also registered multiple domain names associated with podcasting. That usage was discovered and reported on by Curry and Dave Slusher of the Evil Genius Chronicles website. "
