The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Couldn't believe my ears when I heard that, this morning. I think it was Fincham, not sure what time, but basically wasn't impressed with someone donating £2.

Grade-A moron, I actually like Matt and his role in the team, but his comment has irritated me enough to post a thread on it!

Rant over.

I was surprised by the teams' reaction to that to be honest, because much as I'm not a fan of Matt's, I thought it was a fair enough comment. Unless you're really in dire straits yourself surely you can afford to throw in at least a fiver. I'm no Simon Cowell, but that's generally what I give if I do choose to donate to a cause.

I've given near a tenner, doesn't mean someone giving £2 should be insulted though.

I prefer to give to people 'doing something' as opposed to someone just standing around with a bucket, so he'd have been lucky to get a couple of pence off me!

Yeah, but I'd have thought the fact he was clearly broadcasting on the radio would have made people give more than they would to your usual bucket-toting chugger.

So...in summary, when folks put money into those buckets, it's usually £5s or more, anything less is despicable? No, Everyone is broke right now, even being able to give a silver coin imo is a big deal. a £2 coin should have been celebrated not berated. What was he expecting her to give? A cheque for £500?

Anyone not donating at least £100 is scum. SCUM!

It's not like there's been any kind of global economic collapse that has crippled the nation's finances.

I blame Matt Fincham.

I never donate to any charity on spec like that. Putting money in buckets or collecting tins is the least effective way to donate to any registered cause. Like many people, I budget on a monthly basis for my regular charity giving, and when CIN or Comic Relief or something like that comes along I don't feel obliged to make extra donations - the charities I already support are as close to my heart as anything these big Telethon type fundraisers do. If something that someone is doing grabs my attention of course I will give, like the marathon show, but on the whole not giving to someone shaking a bucket under my nose (which is illegal by the way) won't ever make me feel guilty.

I haven't heard what was said or by whom, but if someone actually attempted to belittle an individual on air to millions of people for "only" giving £2 they are despicable.

Matt was wrong to say that and I was shocked just like Moyles and the rest of the team in the studio were, but Matt apologised and realised he was wrong.

No big deal.

True. I bet Matt felt a right pillock to be fair.

1hr 24min into the show.

I must admit that after just hearing it again he was more dismissive than I recalled. He did still apologise and seemed to understand that he was wrong when Moyles explained it.

Just listened. It does rather suggest that Matt is a bit out of touch if he doesn't regard £2 as much of a donation! If it had been me I would probably have just put my spare change in. It's 5wks to Christmas and I don't earn a lot - £2 is enough that I would miss it.

It rather reminds me of the "it's impossible to live on ten grand a year" debate.

I texted in twice to donate a tenner, but that was only cos I have an old sim card in the drawer with £40-odd still on it. I couldn't have afforded it otherwise.

I often wonder why people give to these charities anyway. I am quite sure some people are entirely altruistic when donating, but the people who donate and then text into Radio 1 saying they have just done it are simply looking for a pat on the back.

I agree with yudster on this one. I have set charities that mean something to me and I give to them. Just because someone sets up another charity, even if it is a worthy cause, doesnt mean I am just going to donate to them as well. If you walk round my city centre for an hour and gave to every charity that asked you for money you would leave there skint.

The way I see it is donate the money you want to the charities you want, but dont brag about it, and even better, keep it to yourself.

This is the problem I have and it prevents me from donating at a consistent basis. I think giving to charities you care about is great and all or even other charities but I wonder does all the money get to the charity or there are so many cuts along the way that they hardly get anything whatsoever from the actual total at the start. I just feel that way since you raise millions of pounds yet still things seem the same in certain places. Some people's lives change for the better thanks to certain charities yet others still feel the same.

The reason I usually avoid Telethon type charities like Comic Relief or CIN is because the money is split between hundreds of different charities, and I know that there are some in there that I would actually NOT want to support - not because of what they are trying to do necessarily but because I don't believe that the way they are doing it is the right way. I would rather target specific charities and, if possible, specific projects within those charities.

They gave money. Is that not good enough for you?

Exactly. And that's the point. A donation is a donation is a donation.

If we want to be all Marxist about it, then I'm all for that, but there should be no denigration of giving, given there can be no context of what it meant to the giver.

Luke 20:45-21:4 wrote:As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. "I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."

Fincham, you've been Bibled. (with the emphasis on the fact that Matt wasn't aware of this person's circumstances to judge their donation)

edit. Basically what Wykey said, but replacing Marxism with Jesus.
