I think Chris does trust Matt, or he wouldn't be allowed as much free reign as he sometimes has. It's obvious that he's the butt of jokes, but, for example, I have a manager that is the butt of jokes - doesn't mean they're bad at their job, hated or not trusted. The whole "Pinchem Fincham" persona is a caricature of his real personality in the same way they rib Dom for being under the thumb or Dave for being stupid.
I forget which features have been produced by Matt, but I remember Aled usually name checks him when he has, and it's usually a good segment, well designed and presented. Some of the musical stuff he has come up with has been brilliant, and while not maybe normal Radio 1 material, I think it fits the show as a whole, and certainly Chris' interest in music.
I think he's a valued member of the team, and I actually wish he was on more often, as something good normally happens when he's around! With respect to them all, it can get a bit dull hearing the same old voices over and over again, so someone else in the mix makes it more fun.
I think Chris actually has a good deal of respect for Matt. But just because we respect someone, doesn't mean we'd want to go to the pub with them.
