Does anyone else think the quality of the music that is played on Radio 1 over the last year has really dropped? Maybe I am biased because some rnb or dubstep is just not my thing, but generally I like all sorts of music. Yet I find myself skipping at least half the music in Chris' show.

Having said that, I am 22 in two weeks so maybe Im getting old... :D

No you're right. I'm a fan of all sorts (Skirllex, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, DJ Fresh, Rusko, Arctic Monkeys, etc) and I used to look at teh R1 playlist for additions to my music library, but recently I've been pretty disappointed with a lot of the music. How many times do they need to play Calvin Harris - So close and when am I supposed to enjoy the latest Lady Gaga Country Western single tat?

I am disappoint.

Back when I started listening to Chris Moyles and some other shows on Radio 1, the playlist was decent enough with a few stinkers. Nowadays, the majority of it is pretty crap and the fact is they play certain songs a lot more often than they used to back then. I don't like Dubstep or that sort of stuff pretty much and most of that stuff is just plain noise and nothing enticing about it. Hence why Chris Moyles is the only show on Radio 1 now I listen to whereas it was a chunk of them before that.

Doesn't help that most of the songs that get No 1 are pretty mediocre nowadays.

I'm another one who thinks that the playlist has definitely got considerably worse over the last few years. Whilst listening back to the shows on iplayer, I'd say there's only three or four songs I don't skip over most days, and when I'm listening live I often turn down the sound or turn off the radio for a few minutes if a particularly awful song comes on-which is quite often these days.

But knowing that Aled is one of the members of the current playlist commitee means I'm not too surprised at the amount of crap that gets through (no offence Aled). Obviously the musical tastes of the other members aren't too much better.

I wonder if Greg's ten minute takeover was an attempt to relieve the gloom of rubbish music? Or just a lazy feature? Probably the latter.

I don't think I've really noticed a difference. Being primarily a metal fan, I always expect Radio 1 playlist music to be stuff I'm not really into, so beyond that I think I just categorise it all as 'chart pop' (or maybe vaguely indie or dance, but it all sort of merges into one 'radio friendly' genre). I must be pretty good at mentally tuning out the music cos 95% of the time it doesn't bother me, and I never feel the need to turn the radio down or over when they're playing music.

I agree, music on Radio 1 is just rubbsh, feel the playlist has declined over the last couple of years rather than months. What bothers me is the decline of bands played on Radio 1 during the day, its just awful dance tracks and this crappy dubstep nonsence. I know they do more on an evening for bands, but the most of the listeners are during the day and thats why we rarely get any instrument based bands in the top 10!! I mean we hav'nt had a big successful band thats been big in the UK and America since The Arctic Monkeys. All the new bands are finding it harder and harder to breakthrough cause dance and the like have taken over the playlist so the have limited success and just fade away or are still going but Radio 1 just ignore them.

My music taste is quite varied for someone at my age of 33. I love music from Dubstep, Rock, easy listening to some orchestral pieces but lately the pop music that Radio 1 plays is getting worse. Whenever any of Ollie Murs songs comes on or some of the pop music that gets played i turn the volume down wait about 3-4mins then turn it back on up. Can't real bands get on the playlist or is it the Simon Cowell effect. I wish that it was more varied in what is played.

Okay, this is interesting. Would you not have added the Lady Gaga song? Arguably the biggest singer on the planet right now?

Calvin Harris is one of our best testing songs - still.

Why don't we all post her the three current likes on the playlist, and three biggest dislikes.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/playlist/

Likes - Dappy, - No Regrets, Sak Noel - Loca People and Foo Fighters - Arlandria
Dislikes - CeeLo Green - Cry Baby, red Hot Chili Peppers - The Adventures of Raindance Maggie, Jay-Z & Kanye West - Otis

Likes: One Direction- you don't know (I'm ashamed to admit I really like this), Lady Gaga- you and I, Calvin Harris- close to you. These 3 I like because they are REALLY catchy.
Dislike: Rhianna- Cheers, (possibly the worst song on radio 1 atm, I believe if it wasn't Rhianna, it wouldn't have gotten played) The Saturdays- and a 3rd I can't seem to think of

I think the problem is the way Radio enforces the playlist so religiously, it's one of the reasons I now only listen to the Chris Moyles show, when I used to listen to everyone, it got to the point where I was able to look at the time and say "oh it's 4:30 now, it means that Song X will be coming on in a minute." and sure enough it did.

I really prefer Golden Hour to any other shows on radio 1 because you can't set your watch by what song is about to come on the air

Couldn't really tell you about most of them, cos unless I'm on the website while listening I won't see whats playing at that moment. But I do like that new Kasabian one, not a big lover of their work, but that stands out from all that other dancey stuff.

Oh Al, Sak Noel is just awful. I definitely agree with you about foo fighters, although all the dislikes you've listed are great songs but get played far less than all the crap on the playlist.

Dislikes: The Saturdays, Rihanna, One Direction, Lada Gaga, Example, Jay Z - Kanye West (dreadful) Calvin Harris and that idiot Dappy.

Likes: Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kasabian, Coldplay, Cee Lo Green and Blink 182, basically mostly bands who play with some call instruments, you may have heard of this new concept!!!!

Like: Jay-Z & Kanye, Lady Gaga, Foo Fighters (and that's a grudging third - I don't really think the Foo Fighters have been any good since 2003)

Dislike: Dappy, Red Hot Chili Peppers (last good in 1998) and The Kooks

All the rest I'm ambivalent to really.

People seriously like that Jay-Z & Kayne West excuse of an actual flowing song. It's rare I agree with Aled and said it before not too long ago but that song is just awful. Same with that Sak Noel song I just heard during work in the night-shift for the first time. Unfortunately, it's stuff like that that will hit the top 10 where actual good songs get nowhere because the public's taste in music has severely dropped over the past decade or so.

I agree with the dislikes Aled gave with the exception of Cee Lo Green. Kind of like that song and most of his songs he has had out.

Dislikes: Jay-Z & Kayne - Otis, Sak Noel - Loca People, Red Hot Chilli Peppers (old stuff is way better than their current stuff)
Likes: Kasabian - Days are Forgotten (like the guitar riff in the chorus). Can't really see two on there I can say I actually quite like but if I had to choose it would probably be Bruno Mars & Cee Lo Green. Some of the songs on there I haven't heard so don't have any opinion.

But Aled, half of the playlists are rubbish. Why does it seem that only the rubbish half gets played?

I love the show and have listened for a decade at least. The music is at its worst now. I used to get a 3 and a half hour show to listen to. Now im skipping most of the music. Thank goodness Chris doesn't play much anyway!

I understand Radio 1 is trying to appeal to the youth of today, but what about the rest of us?

I'm well out of the demographic so i just mentally tune out whenever theres music on the show, except for the odd track or the Golden hour.

Then again though, the youth of today will like anything if they are told that it's cool to.

I only listen to the CMS so the playlist doesn't really impact on me much. However, I don't really actively dislike much that I hear on the radio, and some I find pretty good. I couldn't tell you what any of them are though. I don't listen for the music.

Realistically, does any mainstream radio show play decent music? Local music stations, Capital, others? Any time I'm channel surfing during the day, although the music may be more varied, it's usually a bigger variety of rubbish. So the R1 playlist has new rubbish, everyone else has old rubbish!!

I concur

Instead of making a new thread, I'll just ask here. Anyone know why when someone makes a song request that isn't playlist/contemprary, they play it but talk over it from start to finish? E.G today when D. Walliams asked for Abba, Chris played it but chose to speak over it. It's quite a common thing I've noticed.

Not blaming Chris/complaining or anything, just curious.
