What is the best christmas carol? It could be for any reason, such as ease to make up alternative lyrics.

Nope. I hate those sorts of music religiously, so I really can't be arsed to learn.

If you hate those sort of things reliugiously, should you not actuyally bother celebrating christmas? Because that's the whole reason for it. Do you celebrate Diwali or anything else? no???? then Why Christmas.

No as that's wrong as he was born in September and they stole this date to celebrate from another festival so to be exact it's not really because of him.

Well, Nablo, you're half right but It has never actually been prooved exactly when he was born. It is a historical fact that he was born, and in a stable BUT nobody has been able to say exactly when it was, from records an dthe bible it is very likely he was born in the summer months but not nescessarly Septmeber. You were right that the date, th e25th December, was an old pagan festival that Christaians decided to use to celebrate Christmas to stop people celebrating the pagan festival - as they didn't knwo the date on which he was born any day would do and that was as good as any. So Christmas is still all about Jesus' birth, it is just probably clebrated on the wrong day.

historical fact my arse. its well known that most "historical facts" can be disproved in some way or another. there was probably hundreds of kids born in stables but call him the son of god an make up a few stories an you get the biggest cult (thats CULT) in the world....

Agreed. I can't believe that people are taken in by this, however I get a few days off work and some presents out of it, so I'll celebrate anyway! :)

Fair enough, each to their own, everyone is free to believe what they like, I have no problem with that. It is true Gaspode that most historical facts can be disproved in someway, thsoe which are made up that is, it is also true, however, that most (And I'm talking 99.9%) ofthose scientists and historians who have publically set out to disprove the life of Jesus and the stories surounding it (those which are documented in the bible) have ended up becoming Christians after being unable to do disprvve anything, and therefore realising what its says in the bible must be true.

And Bob, I know it was a throw away comment but the day of his death and rising , just the day on which we celebrate it.

Like I said, everone is free to believe what they like so I will leave this discussion here and say no more (Even if I'm pushed). You can belive that aliens made the world or a chemical explosion just happened to form intricate things such as fully functional human beings (Or apes if you believe in evolution..ahem, cough, ahem), it doesn't bother me. But, as in my originbal point, if NOBODY belived in these things then Christmas and Easter wouldn't be here and we wouldn't have the good telly, and the turkey etc (All Christams traditions stem from the menaing of Christmas), so you ahve to be thankful for the "Religious" part of it in some way and at leats acknolwedge it even if you don't think it's right.

Yeah, but by using that philosophy, if we're right then you'll go to hell, then you'll be eating your words.

This thread angers me. I'm not going too say to much more because Eddie has pretty much summed it up.

Oh yeah, and I do know all the words to most carols due to being in our local church choir. We had our carol service last night which went well, always one of my favourite nights in the year!
