I was too young as well but just listening to a few clips on youtube and just generally on the internet gave me a flavour of the passion the man had for good music. By all accounts he was one of the most popular Dj's on Radio 1 and could possibly be considered as the most popular and influencial when it came to music. Like I said before I find it disguisting that Radio 1 cannot spare an hour out of their poor schedule past 9pm to pay homage to a great man and musical legend. I mean who cares about what happened to some deluded wannabes who were rubbish on a "talent" show some years back!! I could imaging this being on a Radio station with close link to ITV etc but not on one that is meant to remain impartial and free from media influences. Who actually cares??

The aim was to create a similar sort of show with someone as passionate as him for music, and at first it was a success with Colin Murray - it was like John Peel refreshed for a new century. I'm not saying he knew as much as John, but that would have come with time, and if you ever listened to him he wasn't exactly a thicko. When Colin left, Huw Stevens should have replaced him to try and continue that tradition, but instead we get Grimmy who basically has a daytime show with a different playlist and that is a crying shame to the memory of John and shame on Radio 1 in general for letting both of the above get this way. For all the flack they get, they do a great job most of the time, but they have gotten it so very wrong here.
Again I agree. One of the biggest mistakes radio 1 made behind Cotton and Yates was to hire Grimmy. There again he appeals to the auidence range that radio 1 want but great radio isn't about meeting demographics. Great radio is meant to be entertainihg and a must for all the fans of a show. This is what John gave to Radio. People wanted to listen to his show. It built a bridge between all genres of music and age ranges of people. Colin was a great in that slot- ok he was never going to be John Peel no matter how long he was in the job but he was one of the closest people radio 1 could have had. Equally, I really enjoy Huw's shows whether they be covering for GJ or JW etc or just his shows oh their own. He really shows the passion that a great music DJ needs to have.
Really, what radio 1 needs is someone with the "youth" and "popularity" or Grimmy, the appeal and sharp mindedness of Colin Murray and the passion for music of Huw or to a lesser extent Zane. They would then have the perfect DJ to fit into the evening slot that just seems to me anyway, to be boring, dull and not worth the time listening to.

Can't see anything on the wesbite, but I know his son presents a show on Fridays and is quite good by all accounts (and sounds scarily like his dad!)
I can't see anything on there either but I ask myself why shoould they have to. Peel was radio 1 royalty and should have been celebrated on there. Granted had 6Music sone something I have no doubts that it would make for great listening but Radio 1 shouldn't rely on others to do what they should.
Sorry for my rant but I really think Radio 1 needs to get its act together at times like this.
