Radio 1 boss Andy Parfitt spent £125 on a cake to celebrate DJ Chris Moyles becoming the longest-serving host of the breakfast show and then claimed the cost back on expenses.

Parfitt bought the gift on September 5 last year but only claimed the money back in the latest round of expense claims.

A BBC spokeswoman said: "The cake was bought for the breakfast show team to mark them becoming the longest-running breakfast show in Radio 1's history. This was a way of saying thank you to the seven people involved in making the show."

BBC staff normally have to submit expenses within three months and any claims after that must be approved by a manager.

Parfitt, who has been in charge of the station for 12 years, defended the controversial DJ last month after a half-hour on-air rant about pay.

He admitted it was not "the best Chris Moyles programme I've ever heard" but said he did not think the presenter had "not crossed the line".

Moyles, one of the BBC's highest earners, drew criticism for devoting a section of his show to talking at length about how he had not been paid.

During his rant, Moyles hit out at BBC bosses, accusing them of "a huge lack of respect" for failing to pay his wages.

He said he was "very, very angry" about the situation and asked "why should I come in?".

As listeners texted in about his diatribe, he began criticising them, telling one: "If you really have a problem with that, I'm telling you now I'll pay your licence fee and you can switch off and listen to someone else. Go and read the Daily Mail, you miserable fart."

It's a stupid story, but you would think that Andy Parfitt could have stretched to the £125 himself, seeing as he's supposed to be quite matey with Moyles going by what Chris has said on air in the past. It seems a bit stingy to claim something like that back on expenses. Where were Rachel's cake-making skills when they were needed?

Have you seen Ace of Cakes or Cake Boss? Those bakers have something like a $1000 minimum on their cakes and are usually two or three times that. £125 for a extravagent cake, in London, is hardly a lot.

I've just ordered a retirement cake for one of our directors (well its one way of telling her.....). Its going to be fairly big but not massive, it needs to feed about 30 people - its going to cost £45. If I had ordered one the size I imagine Moyles' cake would have had to be I would expect to pay considerably more than £125.

Do none of these press have any recent photos of Chris?! They always have to use outdated pictures when he was a completely different person to now really. He has matured a lot since that picture I think.

Sorry, still stand by my claim. There is no part of me which could pay £125 for something I could make myself for £15.

But realistically, COULD you? Could you make a professional quality cake, big enough to feed a large group of people with high expectations at all, let alone for £15? Have you got the tins, a big enough oven, the storage facilities, the space to do it, the ability to decorate it in such a way that people would be happy with it being used for a high-profile celebration? I genuinely doubt it.

Not wanting to brag, but I excel at most things in the kitchen, and am suitably equipped, hence my statement. I may fall down with decor tallent, but would be able to work around that. I'll be honest and say if you're payin £100+ for a cake, its gotta be pretty damn special. I just couldn't bring myself to do it!

But thats exactly the point - a professionally made cake IS something special. The whole point about it is that you can't do it yourself - or if you could, it wouldn't be as good, or as beautiful, or as perfect. I don't doubt your culinary talent, but I would be willing to bet that you couldn't produce anything that people would pay a lot of money for - or if you did, the time and effort involved would make it not worth your while.

£125 wouldn't get you much of a wedding cake, that is for sure.
