The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Some of this seems to have devolved into snide comments in the vein of "I work hard" and "I deserve the money I earn". It doesn't matter what your job is or how much you earn, the fact remains that it's unacceptable for an employer to not pay an employee for two months (or indeed for any length of time). Whether it was right and/or good radio for Chris to discuss it on air is what we should be debating.

I totally back Chris in this, it is crazy and completely ludicrous that an employee of a corporation such as the BBC has not been paid for 2 months. To his credit, he starts talking about his cold and that he wasn't going to come in yesterday, but when Dave questioned him he then said he didn't wanna talk about it.

Hopefully it'll be sorted and he'll stick it out for a wee while yet, cos as soon as Chris does leave there ain't nothing else on Radio1 I'd feel like listening to. Been listening for a long time and just hope if he does then get another radio job somewhere, then that I can actually listen to it in some way (digital/freeview/internet) up here in Scotland.

Hi, newbie here!

I've been a Chris Moyles fan for a long time, love him, love the show and I just needed to show my support for him so I joined up.

In my opinion whether you get 600,000 year or 6,000 a year everyone is entitled to be pissed off when you don't get paid! I do think that the 'rant' may not have happened so publicly had Chris not had personal difficulties right now and been ill but actually I'm quite proud of him, he's not a robot or a puppet, he calls people on their shit and so he should. Lots of love to Moylesy.xxx

I fully support Chris in his stance, and also his right to voice it - but that's really funny......

Sorry if this is re-hashing old answers or going over old ground but it seems obvious what has happened here. Chris Moyles is a contractor to the BBC, probably working under a limited company. Listening over the previous weeks, it seems as if his contract got renewed / changed meaning he may now work under a different Purchase Order / Folio (or something like that) and/or different terms.

The BBC are a large corporation, Chris is a small business (although one with a reasonable turnover). It seems to be the unwritten remit of Accounts Payable departments now in large corporations to withhold payments from small businesses for as long as possible. It happens everywhere - I run a small business and work with large companies; where I know I'll definitely get paid by them and they won't be going bust, they make it very hard for me to get paid on time in a way that fits with my cashflow plans and allows me to pay my suppliers on time. Excuses happen all the time like wrong purchase order number, changed Folio number, changing payment terms from 30 to 60 days on changes of contract - you name it they do it.

I think it's the way the world has gone in these austere times - say they withhold £5000 a month from Chris Moyles Ltd, then it's £5000 a month in their bank. If they have 10 or 15 such contractors then the monthly savings are vast. And it's normally just one or two bean counters in Accounts Payable departments that make these decisions, working on what they feel are the best interests of the company.

I am not saying this is the right way to go - in fact it nearly cripples me every month. I am just saying it's the way it works and is probably what happened here. Is this some sort of personal vendetta? I doubt it, for the reasons I mention above so it shouldn't be seen as anyting more deep as a business issue. Should Chris have aired his business cashflow issues on air? I don't care - it was good if slightly uncomfortable entertainment.

All I can say is, hope it gets sorted soon - and that we get over this slightly bumpy stage where Chris's personal issues are obviously impacting a little bit on the flow of an otherwise amazing show.

I totally back Chris n his rant. I am also a Ltd Co owner who invoices a bigger firm for my services, and on the odd occasion i've experienced a pay anomily, it has driven me nuts.

It not the money, its the point, the principal....... You do NOT * with a mans (or beyatches - im no sexist) money....

It's the lighting, darling. The lighting.

Chris has made it to Popbitch -- as snarky as you'd expect:

"Don't speak to me about my life. You know
nothing about me. Just because I get
paid more than you." - Chris Moyles

Moyles would like his paycheck please

The BBC accounts department that
Chris Moyles was railing about yesterday?
Technically, it doesn't quite exist.
The BBC outsourced its finance and
accounting to a company called
Xansa a few years back.

It's not quite as simple as putting a quick
call into someone there either. In fact,
you'd be lucky if you get them to answer a
phone at all as email communication at
Xansa is de rigueur.

The soundtrack to Chris' almighty
bitchfest sounded like one of those
loops of music that Chris's company has
a co-writer's share on. So if his BBC pay
packet is delayed, then hopefully at
least there's some PRS money to
fall back on.

There's also this http://www.justgiving.com/Christopher-Moyles and this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySSreHakHFE. Richard Bacon discussed the story on his Five Live show today, and asked listeners what they were going to do to raise money for Chris. One texter said he'd be holding a sponsored silence and inviting Chris to join in, which did make me laugh, even as a Moyles fan.

It does now appear, to me anyway, that Chris has turned himself into a bit of a laughing stock. The general consensus from reading around online is that he came off as an overpaid whinger who can't admit when he's wrong, and whilst I wouldn't say I agree with that I can see some truth in it.

Hahaha! That video was great! It reminds me of a regular bit Adam Carolla does on his show called "What can't Adam complain about?" -- the bit started because Adam had bought a Ferrari on eBay and it was being trailered across the country. He was complaining because it was a day late. He can complain about anything, and it's fun to listen to.

I don't know why there's so much coverage of this. Chris is fond of a rant.

Maybe it's because the BBC are under the spotlight at the moment, or it also may have blown up because Krishnan Guru-Murthy listened live and tweeted about it.

god I hope moyles gives that elisabeth mahoney both barrels in the morning. What a bitch.

It's nice that when it comes to moyles, facts don't seem to matter when you can give someone a good kicking. when it comes to chris moyles, every paper is fox news.

BBC radio boss defends Chris Moyles over on-air rant

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/se ... -tim-davie

"Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles had suffered a 'rough morning' and is always someone who 'speaks his mind', says Tim Davie

'Chris is always going to be someone who speaks his mind. His listeners know that,' said Tim Davie.

The BBC head of network radio, Tim Davie, has come to the defence of Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles after his 30-minute on-air rant, saying he had suffered a "rough morning" and has always been someone who "speaks his mind".

Davie, the BBC's head of audio and music, said he wanted to give Moyles space to express himself and did not regard the broadcast as a breach of editorial standards.

"I don't think it was utterly inappropriate," Davie told the Guardian's Media Talk podcast. "I think at the end of the day, Chris is always going to be someone who speaks his mind. His listeners know that. It was a lively broadcast, he said he had a pretty rough morning, but that's what listeners expect from Moyles.

"There's a huge difference between deep editorial issues that are causing offence to the audience and whether a DJ like Chris is talking about, or frankly ranting about, something for a while. People like myself are very clear that we want to give DJs space to do their thing, that's what we do. It's different to whether there's a breach of editorial standards, where we've got to be very tough."

However, the BBC Vision director, Jana Bennett, admitted the broadcast was "pretty unusual". She said it was a "wrong side of the bed type day" for the DJ.

"Obviously it was very heartfelt," Bennett told Victoria Derbyshire on BBC Radio 5 Live yesterday .

"He's obviously a human being, it probably was a really bad hair day and if he wasn't paid I would hope it would be something he would talk to his bosses about. I would absolutely hope the situation is rectified. He obviously let it all out in a way that was pretty unusual."

Separately, Davie said he was "happy with the current arrangements" for BBC Radio 5 Live controller Adrian Van Klaveren not to move to the north-west full-time when his station moves to Salford next year. "The primary question is can someone do the job and run the station," he said"

Chris said this morning that he "had to do it in order to get it sorted" - which I took to mean NOT that he did it on purpose to provoke a response, but that as fall out from the whole thing the accounts department had got their arses in gear and done what they should have done weeks and weeks ago.

Its pretty poor when you only do your job if someone makes a fuss on national radio about the fact that you haven't.

What a surreal week! Keeping positive, I know in the opening link this morn they were making the comparisons with Anchorman after that flu pic of Chris. So if the film is anything to go by Chris should be due a happy ending sometime soon! All this publicity may even help the next set of rajars. If having any publicity is good for ratings, then having the Metro and Mirror front pages almost all to himself yesterday is no bad thing.

It also very positive to read the comments in the guardian from the network radio head that BBC DJ's are given space to do their own thing, obviously recogniseing the unconventional genius of Chris!

I've been waking up at 7.30 all week. I'm starting to think it might be an idea to set up the iPlayer, get myself some tea and a blanket, and listen to the past three first half-hours in a row this Sunday night.
#419094
Part of the first half hour today consisted of them talking about how a lot of us think the first half hour is often the best bit of the show. I think that.
