Of the current presenters, Greg is the best bet, but it really depends how things develop between now and the time that Chris stops doing the show... which may or may not be soonish.

I completely agree that he'd be a fool not to take it but my concerns are twofold:-

1. It suggests he think he is the next best thing which IMO is far from the case.
2. I don't like the fact he is being so open about it when usually he is so keen to toe the BBC/Radio 1 line.

That quote brings to mind the interview Chris did with Heat magazine back when he was on afternoons which ran with the tagline: "I could absolutely kick anybody's arse on breakfast." God knows why I remember that, but there ya go. He got the job not too long afterwards.

Conversely, I've just finished reading Mark Radcliffe's book Thankyou For The Days (which is great) and one chapter recalls his and Lard's short time on breakfast in 1997. He describes in some detail their reluctance to take the job and the stupid demands they made (including a 50% salary hike) in the hope that management would change their minds and rescind the offer (which as we all know they didn't). So I s'pose there are people out there who would say no if it was offered...

I think though that Greg still has a lot to prove before he could be handed the breakfast show. In Scott's favour, he does have a record of doing different features and even all the Edinburgh stuff shows he can be a bit different and versatile still. Its a separate argument about peoples opinions of these features of course!

While Greg I think would be my favourite for the next breakfast show DJ, it's probably about time he tried to assemble a larger on-air team. Producer Neil is fine but compared to Moyle's afternoon team, Greg still has quiet a way to go to giving his show a unique identity.

I have a horrible feeling that someone "trendy" like Grimmy or Fearne will be lined up. With all the "DJ's are too old" thing I think they'll go for someone younger.

I wish I could say that there's someone who I'd like to see take over from Chris whenever he decides to go/is pushed out the door, but there's just not.

I can just about put up with 10 minutes of Scott Mills now and again, and the same goes for Greg, but for me, Chris and the team are a great mix of characters that don't take themselves too seriously, and that comes across when you listen to them.

How the BBC plan to replace all that with something people will want to listen to is hard to fathom.
That's one of the reasons that Chris keeps his job regardless of what crap the papers print about him leaving, IMO.
They just don't have anyone that can do the job as well as him.
I'm sure even his haters are aware of this.

So I wouldn't say that I'd stop listening if Scott Mills gets the gig, simply because I'd stop listening if any of the current crop of DJs replaced him.

Anyone remember the 2 "young" DJs that replaced Smashie and Nicey?

I wonder if we'll get a similar situation, much like when Evans left (well got sacked), where after Moyles goes it'll take several different DJ's before they get a perfect replacement? Mayo was popular, Goodyear never really got a chance and was more of a temporary fill in, Evans was popular, Mark & Lard (sadly) weren't and as Nicola mentioned above they didn't really want the gig, Zoe Ball did OK & Sara started off well but trailed off by the end.

Chris has been more or less consistently on top, so it's going to take someone great to cover him & unfortunately I think they may suffer first off with whoever replaces him, not because they may necessarily crap but because they ain't Moyles.

I don't get either of those things from that quote. On 1), he's the regular stand in, so he would clearly be considered when there is a vacancy. On 2), what he's said is if he was offered the gig he'd take it, and the early mornings aren't a problem. I fail to see how that is at odds with the BBC line?

There's every chance that the quote was trimmed by the journo who wrote that argument, and Scott had preceeded that line by saying that he thinks Chris is great and hopes he'll be doing breakfast for a long time.

Grimmy was utterly horrid doing weekend breakfast, the only reason to ever go anywhere near the show was just in case he'd been on an all-nighter and Chappers and Dave were covering. I can't see somebody like Fearne doing the breakfast show solo, particularly after the level of criticism that she's attracted from doing the morning slot (although personally, i find Sara Cox massively more offensive).

In my opinion, Radio 1 desperately need to be growing some new talent. I can't stand Dev - his recycling of old local radio ideas is just painful, nor is Matt Edmondson any good having now turned the Lie-In on Sunday mornings into just another formatless show. If i'm honest, the people i enjoy most on R1 as presenters at the moment are Alex Metric and Rob da Bank, who are both really passionate about the music they showcase, just a shame both are busy with lots of other projects to keep them amused.

Anyway, i thought the last idea being mooted by the mainstream media was that when Chris finished on breakfast, Vernon would be given the job seeing as he's "somebody off the telly" and would grab headlines.

I don't like Mills in the afternoon, and I can't bear him on breakfast. BUT - he was covering the chart show last night, and he made it sound good. I had forgotten that he used to do the chart show, and that I used to enjoy listening to it.

Correct, Chris commented on it said something along the lines of "he's supposed to be covering my show, but you know whatever..." He didn't sound too pleased at the time.
