This weekend I'm going to buy a wireless router for my laptop (at last), however I'm rather confused as to what one to buy. The Netgear one's get praised & rubbished in equal measure as do the Belkin ones.

The only one I have read about (although unfortunately there aren't many reviews online for it) that seems to be decent is the ASUS N DSL-N11 which I may go for.

However I don't really want to shell out for one that turns out to be a load of shite, so I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a decent wireless router at all.

Any help greatly appreciated :)

Excluding times when routers have been physically (or electrically) damaged, I've only seen a handful of routers that have actually been the cause of any problem, and then those problems were fixed by a simple firmware update. In my experience, all routers are much of a muchness, even the no-name brands are pretty decent. Of course, if you want decent Gigabit speeds over LAN then I'd go for a Netgear, Belkin, D-Link or Linksys with higher specs to get a decent and constant throughput, but if you're going to be limited by ADSL speeds, then pretty much anything will do.

Personally I always recommend Netgear to anyone that asks. Just because I have had better experience with them then any of the other main rivals.

I had, until last week, a linksys router for about 3 years that was great. Got a free BT homehub last week and haven't noticed any difference.

I also got BT vision free for a year with free ESPN!

My flatmate, who works in IT, says that Netgear products are pretty good, particularly the DG384G which is the one that we use at home apparently. (I wouldn't know...)

Thanks all for your advice. :)

Ah so Netgear's aren't that bad then, a few people did mention that the Netgear DGN1000/DGN2000 (which is labelled as N150, not a plain N in the Argos catalogue) that the signal drops out every 5-8 minutes & that it's not that good.

The other query I've got is that I have the Great Eastern mainline running behind my house with trains running every 3-5 minutes in the peak hours, will this effect a wireless signal?

Are you putting your router on the tracks?

 No, what I mean is would the trains zooming past effect the wireless signal? I know that certain signals are effected by outside interferences such as electrical masts, mobile phone masts, etc. but didn't know if the railway would (it's powered by overhead cables)

Affect. Affect is the verb - "to affect" - effect is the noun - "an effect". Sorry Johnny, I couldn't help myself.

It depends on what you're using it for. Some people buy a cheap router, try and use it for gaming and then complain when it can't hold the signal well enough.

I have a Belkin N1. Image. I don't think you can get that one anymore but they have more up-to-date equivalents. I use it purely for my PS3 and it tend to usually have over 90% signal strength (sometimes 99 or 100%) and I've never had any problems with it.

My router is netgear have had no problems with it whatsoever, you can check out reviews on CNET most of the routers reviewed will be available in UK as well. 8)

Don't forget to lock down your router when you have it set-up, there's bandwidth thieves everywhere

I'm mainly going to be using mien for uploading edited Moyles show's more than anything else, my Brother is getting a MacBook next week so we'd need one that shares.

The Netgear DG348 (?) I had was the MkI model & was probably out of date, plus the Ariel had no cover over it so it was probably buggered, I'll get the DGN1000 in Argos then tomorrow...

Yeah I notice that when it searches for other routers it found quite a bit last time. Thanks for the review link by the way :)
