I've recently copied all of 2008s podcasts onto a memory stick to listen to in the car (yeah check me with my usb car connection - bling bling! :? ) which i've noticed has MANY merits.

1. I can now listen to Chris out of the standard 0630-1000 time frame.
2. When going under and underpass or short tunel etc, i never miss a cruical punchline due to loosing signal briefly.
3. When stopping to get out the car for essential supplies (fags, beer/wine, porn, class A's, toilet paper etc) you don't miss anything!
4. I'd never realised how much bass Chris and Doms voice has, and ditto with some of the jingles. Usualyl listen to show at work on headphones, the car system makes things sound much more manly.

Makes me very happy. Just thought I'd share.

You shouldn't lose your FM signal under an underpass, surely? AM or MW maybe, but not FM unless it's a very long underpass.

Maybe its just me, but the main underpass I use often looses the signal for approx 2 seconds.... Always seems to tie in perfectly with a punchline, never a missed bit of jingle of something!

I lose my FM signal on my mp3 player something terrible on the tram. (Particularly around G-Mex for those of you that know the Manchester tram network!) I usually wave the wire around like an idiot for a couple of minutes. I've missed many a joke/question/punchline cos of that.

My computer syncs the previous days show to start at 630. It also copies it onto the iPhone which means I start listening in the house, then switch to the car, then to the underground as I make my way to work.

I win. :)

I lose signal in my truck going through the Bell Common tunnel on the M25, yet it works fine going through the Dartford Tunnel :?

When I used to listen to the radio on the way to work about 5-6 years ago I always had agro, Debden had difficulty picking up Radio 1 half the time, which when it did you could forget listening to Capital, Virgin, Kiss, etc. as they just wouldn't pick up without a lot of interference. As for Ilford, you normally get a crap pirate radio station interfering with all but Radio 1, but even then sometimes they managed to bleed through on the 98.8FM London frequency.

Shame DAB hasn't taken off a bit better really, although even then they've crammed so much on it the sound quality can be atrocious at times, with the FM broadcast sounding a lot better.

I'm guessing the Dartford Tunnel has an FM transmitter in it while Bell Common doesn't? The Tyne Tunnel does, so no loss of reception there.

That's the plan, however some stations have since closed their DAB frequencies as it wasn't "financially viable". The Daily Heil apparently are asking their readers to back their "boycott DAB, support FM" campaign.

To be fair, there is far too many stations on DAB, the sound quality is awful sometimes.

to back that up actually. i struggle for a decent signal on bbc merseyside for the rugby. and i'm less than 20 miles away in warrington. am seems better than dab in that respect.

The problem with DAB is that it's not the best digital platform out there and the problem with getting digital radios into car is most manufactures use a different digital platform, something called DAB+ so it's more likely that at some point they'll try and swtich the UK over to this platform
The only reason we have DAB is cos we were the first country, or one of the first not totally sure, to go digital as there was no more room left on FM for new stations to start up.

I believe they're trying to turn the existing AM signals into digital or something like that, don't ask me how though as I don't remember the article :-P

DAB barely works where I live and people asking about buying DAB radios at Currys are basically advised not to bother. :?
