Toshiba tend to make quite good quality laptops and HP are a good brand. NOT Dell. They always go wrong just after the warranty runs out.

Compaq doesn't really exist anymore, HP took them over.

From my experience with fixing laptop hardware, they all have pretty similar failure rates on things like batteries, power-supplies, screens, etc., no one brand has ever stood out as being particularly good or bad. A lot of people have horror stories about one brand or another, but there's no real correlation to it. Just go for whatever make has the specs you want for the cheapest.

Yudster - Yep I had heard that Sony Laptops are a bit shite so I just threw that one in there at the end

Topher - I've heard that Toshiba's & HP's are good, no way would I go near a Dell, our firm uses them as desktop & laptops and they break all the time, overrated junk in my opinion.

Charlalottie - Nah, I think Compaq's are good (my old Windows NT 4 at work was great, until someone spilled coffee all on it :x) but I haven't seen one for ages, and Console has actually answered as to why that is.

Myth.

EVERYONE that has bitched about Sony recently has actually been bitching about Vista.

I don't think Vista makes the keys fall out and the lid come off, which has happened to two Sony Vaio's we've had! I'm sure they're not all that bad (and we did get prompt replacements, Sony were very good), but it puts you off a bit!

Are you sure?

Well I wouldn't have thought so, but then I'm really not a techie.....!

I've only ever had good experiances with Dell. If anyone asks me I point them to Dell and I haven't had one person say a bad thing. We are buying a Dell in the new year, but it's like with anything these days, you get a bad one sometimes.

Is it hard to wipe all the blood off it afterwards though?

Sorry, I mistyped. I meant everyone I know that has... etc. I really need to not be so tired at the moment.

But they still seem to be getting a bad rep for mainly stuff that's not their fault. Obviously your situation is, but it seems to vary from person to person. I've a Sony and I'm more than happy with it. I've had Toshibas fall to bits on me while I know others who think they're great.

Dell are good laptops, but there are better out there and there are cheaper out there. Dell seem to have moved into something of a middle ground these days.
