Then get him to tell you where he got it - I'm pretty sure there is something about a manditory 1 year warrenty aside from what the store offers. Someone that knows more about this will back me up...

There will be at least a year warranty - but if there isn't, then you can get it replaced or repaired under the Sale of Goods act - sales legislation states that an item must be fit for its purpose and the purpose of a camera is clearly to work for more than six months.

Any ideas what it is or what to do?

C'mon, it started playing up after you got it wet. You're not supposed to get it wet. It's the first thing they'll ask you - what would you say?

water damage is usually not covered by warranty unfortunately - but don't mention it and hope they just replace it

Repeat this ^^ to yourself in the car on the way to the shop and don't fall for any sly questions involving moisture, humidity etc.. They'll even say that they'll send it off but if the service centre detect water ingress they'll return it unfixed and charge you for the privelage (Well, T-Mobile did this to me).

you should have done it through carphone warehouse, they do phone warranty repairs for free no matter where you got the phone from. if it can't be repaired you just get the phone back.

edit. with proof of purchase

I hadn't noticed the bit where it got wet. That puts the kybosh on the Sale of Goods legislation redress.

[quote="charlalottie"] my other cameras got dropped in puddles, drinks etc [quote]

Hmmm.... Is fixing this camera your biggest issue, maybe trying to be less clumsy should be priority, no?!
