I could be about to blow any ounce of credibility that I may possibly have held on this board... when I was a kid I was a huge Simply Red fan. I'm not proud of it, but I was. Anyway, there are still some songs that I can't help but like and this is one of them - Holding Back the Years.

Hehe, the listeners on the George Lamb Show on 6Music seem to LOVE Hucknall. Whenever they do features which require listeners to text in...they always seem to revolve around Hucknall! I believe they now always portray him as a creepy man who lures women into his gingerbread cottage by manual panning 'New Flame' through his stereo :D

Martine McCutcheon was a guest on the show a few weeks back, and she told the story of how Hucknall took her on a date, and she puked on his dreadlocks. He then had to chop them off, not because it was a style choice...but because he couldn't get the vomit out!

Anyways, my choice is a bit odd considering I'm such a rocker, but bear with me. My choice is West End Girls by the Pet Shop Boys...BECAUSE Flight of the Conchords did a brilliant take on it. Their version is called Inner City Pressure.

Have them both!

PS. My favourite line is 'The ladies wouldn't pay you very much for this, looks like you'll never be a concert flautist' :D

I've just realised that we've done quite a lot of the 80's which is a bit of a shame as it's my favourite decade, oh well my contribution, a song that was number 1 in countries but only made number 2 over here, it's Queen with "A Kind Of Magic"

Nice little video as well, I wonder where Disney got the design idea for the genie from Aladdin? ;)

Nope don't worry - me too

Far too many to chose from this year, going for a random choice

Five Star - Can't Wait Another Minute

Five Star! Five Star! Wow there is some serious uncool on here, so I will try and address this with

The Smiths, and a boy with a thorn in his side.

Jill, when I saw you'd chosen The Bangles for this year my heart sank - but you chose the wrong song! THIS is the one! Walk Like an Egyptian.

I almost went for that too.

Have to say though, there weren't many that leaped out at me this year. And that wasn't exactly my favourite, I just thought it exemplified 1986 better than most, it was an important song for the Bangles and for the decade really.

Steve Winwood - Higher Love

Mainly because it still reminds me of this: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=18488

My heart sank when Munki posted the track that i had all lined up and ready to hit send. So then was in a rush to find another song... Good choice Yudster

Funny 'ol year 1986. Many artists seemed to be suffering from their success earlier in the decade and now just pumping out stadium fan-fodder. However, there were many breaking their first album and Simply Red were bringing a soul sound back in. I've bumped into Hucknall on two occassions. First when I was in a Manchester restaurant he caught me clocking him and visibly tutted (ha!- how dare I). Then years later I got on a plane to the US (got bumped to first class) and he turned up and sat next to me. He then beckoned the stewardess and complained that he booked his seat with the proviso that nobody would be sat next to him (ha! - knob). Despite this I still think that his solo performances of Holding Back the Years are mesmerising - a timeless classic he wrote when he was 17 about the split-up of his family. Here's a Sky Arts performance 20 years on:

Apologies, apologies for the late poll. Forgot all about it! To be honest I'm rapidly losing the motivation to carry on with the Game. Last weeks Game had 13 songs nominated...but only 9 votes? :(

Anyway my vote goes to Run DMC/Aerosmith, as it combines my two favourite genres. Rock music, and old school hip-hop!

No worries, seems a bit of a shame that more songs are being nominated than been voted on, wouldn't be so bad if we got the same amount of votes for the amount of songs nominated.

Anyway I went for Bon Jovi's Livin' On A Prayer, a great Mid-80's Atlantic Rock classic
