On 7 September Chris Moyles becomes the longest-serving breakfast DJ on BBC Radio 1 – overtaking Tony Blackburn's record, which was set more than 30 years ago. Chris began on breakfast on January 5 2004, clocking up 2,073 days in the job while Tony Blackburn was in his post as Breakfast DJ from September 30 1967 to June 1 1973, therefore serving a total of 2,072 days.
All this week Chris and the team will be traveling through the UK on a tour bus celebrating the milestone. The 'A Night With The Chris Moyles Show' karaoke evening will be visiting Plymouth, Cardiff, Leeds, Glasgow and London.
Chris said that "We want to say thank you very much to everybody for listening and staying with us. By going out on the road for a week we are trying to thank as many people as we can."
Blackburn, when asked about handing his crown over says; "In the 60s, image was everything. Pop stars didn't tend to marry because they had to appear "available" to their female fans, and radio DJs were expected to be like pop stars: I drove around in an E Type Jaguar. But by the end of my run, I'd married and didn't fit the image any more.
I have a reputation for being cheesy, but that's all we could do in those days – I would never have got away with what Moyles does. He's sometimes very close to the edge, but that's good because it moves things on.
Moyles does the "zoo" format brilliantly, and obviously loves what he's doing; that's the key to longevity. He has been called a bully but he's not. If you don't like him, switch him off. Not many do. I'm a bit sad, but I held the record for long enough and I'm glad to be handing it over to a younger man."
As a site that has been proudly following Chris for the past 4115 days (that's eleven-and-a-bit years), we want to add our congratulations to those that will be broadcast tomorrow morning, and long may the show continue!
