Not quite :P

I let someone pay money into my bank account last month so he could pay an installment on his debt, and this month they have helped themselves to a payment. I have not authorised this, so it's technically theft, and under the data protection act 1984 them keeping a 3rd party's details on file is illegal.

I wanted to know if i can claim compensation, may as well try and get something out of it, if i can.

You will be covered by the DD guarantee offered by all banks and building societies. They will fully refund you for any unauthorised debits. You then have to deal with the originator to sort the debt out. You can then make a complaint to the FSA to claim for additional expenses.
