The even-numbered films are generally considered to the be the better ones.

More or less. Nemesis is just a rip off of Wrath of Khan and it was movie ten. If you're going to watch a Next Generation one, watch First Contact. Generations is so full of holes it takes me longer to rant about them than it does to watch the movie and Insurrection is childish nonsense half the time.

Admittedly, none of them are as bad as Star Trek V. Or as tedious as The Motion Picture... although it's much better if you watch the director's cut now.

Basically stick with 2, 4, 6 and 8. Throw in 3 as well as it forms a trilogy with 2 and 4.

red dwarf specials were poor. they felt like a specially recorded episode to be shown on comic relief or something like that.
the dave reference should be cut from the dvd.
series 2-6 are the best. series 1 is a bit of a slog and very dull sets do not help.

So far I've got Star Trek II & Star Trek VI, I'll probably end up getting all of them anyway if enjoy these two (I'm unfortunately one of those people that can't have "gaps" in a collection or series so I end up getting them all, normally). I think I saw Generations in the cinema as I had a spare Saturday once so me & a mate went and saw it (isn't that the one with Picard & Shatner?) I remember it being a bit dull as I never saw another one after that, to be fair it was the only Star Trek film I've ever seen.

I rather enjoyed the special to be honest. The DVD will have a feature length version so watching it in that format would improve it somewhat. I imagine if they go on to make another series it'll be more like Dwarf of old that in the style of Back To Earth

Sorry jumped in at the end.

I thought that the whole thing was awful. The writing was dire and largely immature, I remember coming up with that sort of thing when I was about 8. Characters visiting the people that actually play them.

I don't think there was a single funny bit. Chris Barrie was terrible, Incredibly stiff. Cat just had no material.

Really shouldn't have happenned. I used to love Red Dwarf and this has just left a sour taste

What did everyone make of the lack of canned laughter (or live audience laughter - not sure which it was)? I got used to it, but I admit I missed it quite a lot. I think I would have accepted it better if a) it was feature length or b) the jokes were funnier, as the lack of canned laughter makes bad jokes stick out more.

Don't know about Red Dwarf, but as a general rule, I agree with Graham Linehan that old-fashioned audience sit-coms are very much missed. There is a place for the mock documentary style, but it's been over done.

I agree. That style works for some shows, but I wish it wouldn't be viewed as standard for all comedy programmes that are now made, especially revivals of previous sitcoms.
