I was just saying about Grimmy aswell. This is getting too much. This basically means they've got him lined up as the next John Peel?

That's very sad news.
I think the last year or so on Radio 1 has been Collin's best work. The show was perfect for the timeslot and he was a brilliant host, with some genuinely unique and interesting features that made every night of the week different.
I have no idea how Nick Grimshaw will ever fill his boots - it's totally the wrong choice for the job. Grimshaw represents the youth and suits his presenting role on Switch etc, but Colin was the perfect presenter for 'the best in new music and alternative classics'. It was one of the best shows on Radio 1!
Gutted.

I agree with everything Tial said. That almost never happens.

I only post on here when I'm riled. WHAT THE HELL???? That was my favourite show (Moreso even than Moyles) I listened to every single one. Ever. And fully intend too until the bitter end. I reaad that Grimmy was covering and I thought....what? "That's stupid. I don't like him very much, why did they do that?" But now, I actually can't believe how ridiculous this is sounding-of course it could be fantastic and I will reserve complete judgement until the show goes out but on first impressions this is the worst decision in radio of recent that I can think of.

Grimmy can have his teenage show (which I as a teenager can't stand, but hey) and weekend breakfast and that's okay but the nighttime weekday slot isn't for people like him. It's for specialist DJs, I don't want to sound to obesessed but that radio slot has a fair bit of sentimental value to me-especially with Colin. I wouldn't like this news at all no matter who took over but if it was someone like Huw (the obvious choice) I could handle it-Grimmy is surely the one of the worst presenters possible to takeover? Does this mean Grimmy is the "new Peel"?? I thought Colin would stick with it for a long while yet, he's hardly pushing 40 like some of the other DJs or even 50 in some others case, so it's obviously his personal decision-maybe he's reacting to the news of older DJs being given the boot, because granted he's not old in age but his show does play some old music. He does sound like he enjoys it, I'm baffled.

It's all football's fault.

Ramble over.

I agree with this. Huw Stevens should have been the replacement.

I fear the worst-I think they might be turning the 10pm-midnight slot into a more mainstream music show-more entertainent based.Maybe Colin quit because he couldnt stomach any changes in this direction.Could be the death knell for Peels legacy.I pray I am wrong.I t wil be interesting to see what sort of statement Colin makes tonight if any re his departure.I wonder if he wil make any DLT like criticism of his bosses!

I was just about to post this. I would also like to share my OUTRAGE!

I loved Colin's show...it was my safe haven from the playlist drivel of the daytime shows, and he had some great features, producers he had great natters with, and didn't have a 'DJ persona'. He was just a nice bloke who played records and chatted a bit, just like Peel really. My evenings used to be great! Put on the Xbox and listen to some Colin Murray :D

Announcing Grimshaw (I refuse to call him Grimmy) as the replacement is kicking the fallen in the balls. He annoys me whenever I hear him on the trails, let alone on his shows!

GRRRRRRRRR! I was having a good day up til now!

This clip illustrates my feelings nicely. Just imagine Colin as Khan and me as Shatner.

Grimey is not the right man to replace Colin.

Surely there is someone out there that would be suitable, as the evening schedule is supposed to be specialist DJ's. What is Grimmy's speciality?

Welcome to the start of the death of the real DJ on Radio 1.

The only person who SHOULD replace Colin is Rob Da Bank, he is the only one left now with the eclectic taste in music that Peel and Murray had.

I cant see Grimmy playing Happy Hardcore, Freeform, Gabba, DnB, Techno and the like like john and Colin did, they played music THEY liked, not what they were told to play, or what was popular, Grimmy just wont have the knowledge of music to be as fresh and cutting edge.

Today is a sad, sad day.

Wonder if 5 live are looking to have him presenting any live sport . He's got that experience with Five after all.

So Colin is there until June then, I'll be honest I've never listened to his show before, however I think I'll listen again to a few of these to see what they're like seeing as many are a fan of his. :D

I wouldent be surprised if there are no real changes to the R1 schedule. In a real world you'd get rid of Jo Whiley to Colins slot and move Sara Cox to daytimes. Perhaps also move greg to weekends as the next stage of his development, although i really like him on early breakfast.

But, in a real world, the media has given them such a hard time no doubt they will just put Grimmy in his place or some shitty switch problem.

Either way, i wont be listening in the evening. I never do.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Murray would have been the next Peel I reckon, that may sound an overreaction but I genuinley believe it.

To John leybourne I reckon you should take a look at bradcali's post for the answer to that. The only thing I can think of is they're making it chart orientated, surely they wouldn't make a mistake so bad as to put Grimmy on a specialist show??? Someone must have pointed it out at R1 seeing as every reaction I've seen so far of this has been the same. No one has welcomed it.

I think this is very significant for the big picture on the future of R1, how can such a major change not be a foreshadowing of what is to come next? Specalist shows Zane & INMWT followed by "chart hits" followed by more specialist stuff. Something's happening at R1 and I don't like it so far.

Colin would be perfect for 6Music but I wouldn't want him to go there because he would fit in TOO much. Part of the joy of listening to the show was that it was like NOTHING else on Radio 1 and had a lovely feel of it being a private club just for a few of us. That wouldn't work on 6Music because that is the idea of the whole station, and so the show would be surrounded by others just like it. It wouldn't work on commercial radio and so for the time being I can't see Colin doing a music show for a very long time yet (probably not until R2 comes a knocking)

Don't think I'll be able to listen in the same way again, just listening now-so far we've heard Father Jack from Father Ted, a Bloc Party classic and some brand new DnB and we're only 10 mins in.

I've never really listened to Colin's late night show, I've caught it on the odd occasion when driving somewhere, but I do think he's a great radio personality whenever I've heard him. From when he's appeared on Scott's show to when they do the bank holiday swap and he does a day shift, he fits in well whichever slot he does. The fact he'll bring in his iPod and play songs randomly from that - even on daytime slots - shows his taste in music and doesnt hide behind the playlist

hmm....Not sure i believe that because he dosent do Five Live every night. There has to be something else going on, etc.

Perhaps he was jumping before he was pushed because Colin is the only person R1 could have got rid of easily. Then move Jo to his show and problem solved. For a while anyway....

Maybe they will put Nihal back on weekend breakfast and move Coxy back to her sat/sunday 1-4 slot. That would allow Chappers and Dave to take over the Sunday lie-in permanently. So at least somethiing good would have come out of Colin leaving!

the day Radio 1 died for me.

Colin is the only presenter I listen to. I can't even listen to Moyles any more.

After May 28th, my station of choice will be 5 Live all the time. Shame because so many of my favourite songs in the last 2 and a half years have come from listening to Colin.

Well, Nick has been further confirmed:

Mar 17, 2009 - After ten years at BBC Radio 1, Colin Murray is leaving to join 5 Live full time. His nightly 10pm till midnight slot will be filled by weekend presenter Nick Grimshaw.

Colin is no stranger to 5 Live as he hosts the weekly Fighting Talk show during the football season. His new job will include a Friday night and Sunday afternoon show. He said: "I'm honoured to be given these new shows on Radio 5 Live. With it comes a responsibility to deliver the best sporting radio content anywhere in the world, and I intend to give 100 percent while introducing my own style of presentation."

Nick, who started his radio career just a few years ago working as part of the promo team at Smooth (FM) in Manchester, will move to the new Monday to Thursday, 10pm-midnight slot from the weekend breakfast show but will continue to co-host Switch with Annie Mac on Sunday nights.

Ben Cooper, Head of Programmes, Radio 1, says: "It will be fantastic to get Nick's mix of humour, music and guests on four nights a week. I look forward to it soon becoming the 'must listen to' show for our young audiences."

Nick Grimshaw adds: "I'm so excited to be taking on a whole new challenge. Doing an evening show for Radio 1 is something I've always dreamed of and I can't wait to start."
