Since the Juicy Pear has been put on the shelf (just beside Roy) I figured I would try something else out. I may make this a running thing, I dunno yet - this is a pilot run.

If I start doing this more often, I'll come up with more specific rules, but basically - here are some questions. I have the correct answers. There may be other answers but, like Robs Pub Quiz, my answers are right. Feel free to argue, I may change my mind if you are convincing enough. No googling. Post answers in this thread - no PMs cos my inbox is full.

I'll start with an easy one to get the ball rolling, most of you have probably heard it before:

Question 1
On the last night of a Polar expedition, four intrepid travellers are down to their very last match. They have to make an important decision: they have an oil lamp, a small gas fire and a stove full of wood. Which should they light first if they are to survive the freezing night air?

Question 2
i) Alex is always getting himself into trouble. One week his teacher gives him detention every day after school. As a punishment, he is asked to carry 100 heavy sandbags across the athletic track to the long jump pit. After struggling with the first ten sandbags, Alex has an idea. He realises that if he puts something into each sandbag it will be lighter to carry. What is it?

ii) Whilst doing his detention one evening, Alex’s teacher asked him to solve the following:
What is the next letter in this series – OTTFFS...?

Question 3
i) Jimmy’s math teacher asked him to multiply three and four three times. What is the correct answer?

ii) What mathematical symbol can you put between 2 and 3 to make a number greater than 2, but less than 3?

Question 4
i) Which word do people in Scotland always pronounce hesitantly?

ii) What do you break by saying its name?

Question 5
Derek and Mark go camping for the weekend. It is 10pm once they have finished pitching their tent. Derek gets into his sleeping bag and falls straight asleep, but Mark tosses and turns, unable to get to sleep even though he is extremely tired. At midnight, a noisy animal passing the tent wakes Derek up, and Mark promptly falls asleep. Why is this?

1. The gas fire. Once it's going you're sorted as you can light the others from that source.

2i. Air. ii. S

3i. 12, 12 and 12. ii. A decimal point.

4i. Hesitantly. ii. Silence.

5. Becaus he's like Wayne Rooney and me. We can fall asleep with a constant drone like a vacuum cleaner, while it wakes others up.

Ah.. I should have got the 'hesitantly' one. And the silence one. For the record, you're wrong on 1 and 2i. Ithought the same for both and was promptly told I was wrong.

Things we have learned in this thread.

1) Have people PM you the answers
2) Don't tell Topher the answers, or he will have confirmed half the bloody questions by post three.
3) The original quiz is always better (take note, Moyles)
4) Console has the answers somewhere...

1) a match

2i) a hole
ii) Ummm... S?

3i) 12

4i) the word "hesitantly"
ii) silence

5) Derek was snoring, so when he woke, the noise stopped and Mark fell asleep.

Can you tell I got a riddle book once for Christmas?!

Haha. * off, the correct answers he posted were obvious after he posted them and I only informed him he was wrong on the other ones; I certainly didn't tell him the answers.

Also, you only helped me. On some of them. Most of them. I got the decimal place one all on my lonesome. I may use these at work tomorrow.

P.S. I think Scottish people pronounce 'hesitantly' like 'hairsetently'.

"There they're there" is the greatest phrase for pronunciation. If done in Northern Irish.

Incidentally, why is it not pronounciation? It's like they got bored with the word half way through and skipped a bit just to get to the end.

I just tested my boss on these and he got all but the last one (his answer to which was "Derek is gay and Mark is not".)

A man is alone on a sunbaked prairie in southern Canada when a fire breaks out and begins spreading rapidly in his direction, aided by the strong westerly wind. He has no means of transport to escape and no water to try and put the fire out. How does the man save himself from the ravages of the fire by making use of a box of matches in his pocket?

I know the answer too as I know this riddle, but I've always disputed that the answer is correct. When the answer is posted I'll explain why so as not to spoil it.

Sorry I should have mentioned that Console posted all the right answers to the last lot.

AC021193 has also just got the last one correct.

Yea, you should have a much more memorable username we won't get wrong, like Tofu and Loot Foose do.

I would change it to AC, but I can't find the area where you can change the username (if there's any). Directions anyone?

He lights a fire on the ground where he is standing, then he starts walking easterly towards the main fire. The wind will fan his fire further westwards, thus burning out the western end of the prairie. Then he can walk back and wait on a burnt area of land when the main fire appoaches.

Console, Zoot and AC123456 got it right.

A man goes to a swimming pool and swims 50 lengths of breastroke. The pool measures 25m (82ft) long and 12m (39ft) wide. It is 1m (3ft) deep at the shallow end then after 15m (49ft) it shelves (at an angle of 45 degrees) to a depth of 2.5m (8ft). How much water is required to fill the pool?
