Hoho. Morecambe and Wise. Well, with any luck he'll have grown them back by the time he starts recording... I'm rather pleased with the choice of Matt Smith, even though his face was compared to that of an Easter Island head on a different website I frequent, I reckon he's going to do a very good job indeed.

I think the thing that surprised me most (since we're taking pot shots at how he looks) was just how much skin he appeared to have for such a large head. He rubbed his face a few times during interviews and there was definitely a lost of play in that skin. He's not far off being a Neopolitan Mastiff.

I still think they should have got the guy who did the voice of Bagpuss to be the doctor. Would have been great. Or Neil Kinnock. Or Chris Barrie. He'd be great. Or Cheggers.

Absolutely not, Matt Smith isn't at all pretty in an eye-candy sense. He is interesting and a bit strange to look at I think, a good combination because it avoides the eye-candy thing but acknowledges that The Doctor simply has to be attractive on some level or another.

If they had been going a bit more for eye-candy they'd have cast someone like Rupert Penry-Jones. Or if, god forbid, they'd have gone all-out for eye-candy we'd have some ex-Hollyoaker as The Doctor. Yuck.

James May. He'd be good as the Doctor. Or Patrick Stewart. Or Will Young. Or Ken Barlow. Or the fat one from Hale and Pace.

Which fat one from Hale & Pace, they both are these days

All these people saying about his looks, Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee & Tom Baker weren't lookers at all. Troughton is always described as having an gargoyle type face, Tom Baker refers to Jon Pertwee as Mr Punch (and even himself as Mr Punch) and Tom is all teeth & curls

True - but don't forget, New Dr Who and Old Dr Who are two entirely different beasts. Today's Doctor has to look convincing doing action stuff - and yes, I know that Jon Pertwee did introduce a macho side to the Doctor previously not seen, but you can't say he looked remotely convincing doing it. The New Doctor isn't a comedy role, or even a "character" role - its an action role. The new production values and the whole look of the thing would mean someone like even the sublime Tom Baker wouldn't be credible in the role these days. The actor needs to look as slick as the production. That was never an issue for any of the old Doctors now, was it?

True I suppose, but I do think that you could have another Tom or Troughton in the role yet add a bit of action to them.

Either way each next Doctor is supposed to have his own unique quirks so it remains to be seen to see what we'll get in 2010, until then we haven't a clue what they have in mind for him.

Why does doctor who have to look sexy? Surely he only has to act sexy?

I tire of the typically gorgeous action heroes, and if you look at a lot of successful actors they're all unique looking.

The character of the doctor (nowdays) is sexy enough, and he's not the ugliest chap about.

For a few horrible minutes i thought it was going to be Nick Holt (?) from Skins...

I absolutely agree - but acting sexy when you are a wrinkly gargoyle is only good for comedy. I think Matt Thingy has a unique and out of the ordinary look which prevents him from being gorgeous, but doesn't prevent him from being magnetic. Thats the key. And from what I've seen of his acting, he won't disappoint there.
