No. What is it about a normally shit song that makes it good just because it has Christmassy lyrics?! Using that logic, The Darkness would have a good Christmas song and they simply don't.

In all seriousness I have to say Mariah is my all time fab Christmas song. I think it's a combination of things.

The tune is upbeat and happy, the lyrics are jolly and positive. In fact it's the most positive song I can think of. I'd happily listen to it all year round.

Mariah's All I want for Christmas was played in the background while Richard Curtis wrote Love Actually, he said it helped him focus on the Christmas Spirit!

And it's probably a love it or hate it track just as the film is a love it or hate it film.

I happen to love them both despite the layers of cheese!

Everything that Alfie said.

Long time no see. Welcome Back!

See All I Want is a genuine Christmas song. Fairytale, whilst brilliant, really isn't a Christmas song, in that its a song about despair and hopelessness.

Nobody has mentioned mine yet - I Believe In Father Christmas by Greg Lake. Can't beat a bit of seasonal prog! That song actually sends a chill down my spine. I also really like the John Lennon one, and River by Joni Mitchell.

I like the Greg Lake song, but again, if you listen to the lyrics, its hardly a Christmas song. Classic though. I don't think I know the Joni Mitchell one, i'll have to find it and have a listen.

I actually know River cos there is a cover of it by Vonda Shepherd and Robert Downey Jr on the Ally McBeal Christmas album (ah, the 90s). But since then I've heard the original and it's a beautiful song. I think the Greg Lake one is about Christmas! "A veil of tears for the Virgin birth"? "The peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell"? How is that not Christmas?? :)

Oh I know it mentions Christmas, but its all very dismal and joyless! I always feel its ultimately a song about disapointment. Which might be very Christmassy for some people, I guess. It is a lovely tune and a beautiful song in its own right though.

I think maybe In Dulce Jubilo is a rare piece of justification for the existence of Mike Oldfield.

Where does Shakin' Stevens sit in your opinion of Christmas songs, Yudwuk?
#368254
Well, its a necessary part of any Christmas album, and familiar enough to qualify as a "favourite" - but it really is rubbish!

I love 'em all, me.

That's the Geraldine/Peter Kay one.

Oy you, watch yourself.

On topic, I see that I posted mine last time this thread was about in 2008, they haven't changed!

Fairytale of New York - The Pogues
I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday - Wizzard
Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade
Last Christmas - Wham!
Driving Home For Christmas - Chris Rea

Apart from The Pogues the rest can change order year to year.

Your list is pointless for having the top song on there. :P I REALLY hate that song but this is coming from someone who doesn't like Mariah Carey whatsoever so I am somewhat biased. I do like the rest of them though with the 2nd song being my favourite Christmas song.

Some of my favourites (apart from the top song, the rest are in no particular order)
Fairytale of New York - The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl
A Spaceman Came Travelling - Chris de burgh (mentions about Christ's birth and that but not really a Christmas song technically I guess but I count it).
Driving Home For Christmas - Chris Rea
Lonely this Christmas - Mud

Other ones I've seen are mentioned as well l ike When A Child is born, I believe in Father Christmas etc. A lot of Christmas songs I tend to like bar anything from Mariah Carey.

Looking back at this thread's history I am so glad I am not the only one that hates All I want for Christmas is you from what Topher said. Plus, I am not a fan of Dominic the Donkey also. (Hearing it being played every show during the month of December will do that).
