(I wasn't going to start this thread yet, but since Zoot has mentioned the Wogan single in the Ask Aled forum, I figured it was probably about time we got things off the ground.)

Sooo.. I have not really cared much in recent years who was gonna get the top spot since it seems that Mr Cowell was destined to win before the year had even begun, however, it sounds like there is a feeling of discontent this year against The X Factor getting to number one.

I have heard rumblings that Peter Kay will be getting Geraldine to release another single, aiming to beat the X Factor in the race to the top. From Peter Kays website: "Geraldine McQueen, the newly crowned champion of ‘Britain's Got the Pop Factor... and Possibly a New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly on Ice’ has called upon the services of Steve Penk to help get one over on X-Factor creator Simon Cowell."

On top of that, Mr Sir Terrence of Wogan (off of 'Radio Two / Eurovision / Children in Need' fame) and Aled Jones (off of 'I'm Walking In The Air / The Snowman' fame) will be trying to get their version of Little Drummer Boy to the number one. The single will be released on 8th December in aid of Children in Need.

Who will make it? Do you just love the same crap that The X Factor farts out each year? Is there anyone else you would rather see up the top? If you could make any of the old number ones get back to the coveted place, who would it be?

Obviously I shall take this opportunity to kick of my 'Wogan for Christmas' campaign. It's for Children in Need dontcha know?

So that means I want Wogan at number one, Peter Kay in number two, a random in number three and Cowell at number four.

I echo my previous sentiments that the charts are irrelevant.

My preference would be (so far) for the Wogan/ Jones collaboration - but I haven't yet heard the Status Quo single, described as a terrible pile of cack by Francis Rossi (in an attempt to take the storyline from Love, Actually out of the movie and into real life I wonder....?).

X Factor will still win it, mainly because although there is a feeling of discontent with it winning every year, there's too many attempts to stop it. They'll all get divided and the die hard X Factor fans will still go out and buy the winner's song.

If you want to stop it, everyone has to agree on which one will stop it and then buy it on mass.

Somebody get Zenon some valiums, Woolworths has gone into Administration, won't be buying CDs from there in the future. Nor pic 'n mix, nor MB Games, other toys and anything else I can remember from my childhood.

Going into Administration is an awfully long way from ceasing trading you know.

Has anyone really bought CDs or any other entertainment products from Woolworths recently?

I really don't think that Administration for an international, if not global, brand like Woolworths is automatically going to mean the end of them. They'll just be in administration until some other corporation buys them up.

Nope, Can't even remember the last time I went into a Woolworths. I see Currys and MFI might be going up the creek as well...

I'd tend to agree with Yudwuk, someone will buy them up and make money on the name - and DSG Group is massive, they won't go under either. Not sure about MFI, I don't think they're as big as they have been, are they? I'm pretty sure they've changed hands a number of times quite recently.

MFI almost disappeared about 25 years ago I think - I'm sure they did disappear for a while, and then the name came back re-branded and spangly. Rings a bell anyway.

There was a time, not too long ago when Woolies had the biggest affect on the chart. They used to sell more CD's than the likes of HMV and Virgin Megastore put together. Whatever was their "Record of the Week" always used to go to number 1.

It explains why the charts were so shit back then really.

To be honest I gave up on the Xmas number 1 years ago. Most of the songs since 1995 haven't been Christmassy at all.

Wizard's "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" is still the greatest ever Christmas track as far as I'm concerned :D

To be honest ever since Woolies stopped selling Licorice Torpedoes they've gone down hill as far as I'm concerned ;)

Geraldine for the top slot.

I heard that Woolies have only got enough money to pay their staff until the end of the week - dreadful for all those people who will lose their jobs. They tried to sell the business and their £365 million for a pound and no one took them up on the offer, I think this will be the end of them they have never evolved they diversified too much you need to be a specialist retailer nowadays (unless you're a supermarket) to survive. It was bound to happen eventually though once the Kingfisher Group got rid of them, they had been bailing them out for years!

I was listening to a fella today, can't remember who but he was from some retail association or other and what he said made sense, that if no one buys before Christmas, they could be * because prospective buyers then have to wait a year to make any money back.

I think the wombat's new single has an outside shot at getting in the top 3 - it's a cracking tune and is a little christmassy. Think it will hit home with the kiddies.

but yeah, will be x factor.
