I was impressed with the fact that the tight shorts the cyclists wear leaves little to the imagination. ;)

I was called a "hater" today at work for not being that interested in Phelps. Then somebody called me a communist.

I wonder what they'd call you if you pointed out that his tiny looking head on his abnormally thick neck makes him look like a retard? (I know he isn't one, before the twassocks start on me).

My word, that Bolt fella can shift a bit. Imagine how fast he could be if he didn't actually stop running 10 meters from the end.

Phelps does look a little "simple" without his swim cap on. He reminds me of Eli Manning- quarterback for the reigning Superbowl Champions New York Giants. They both look like dumb farm boys who can't say much more than, "Awww, shucks."

That was a pretty amazing end to a cracking day's sport. I'm pleased Kirsty Coventry finally got her gold as well.

And so the Phelps story continues, with the help of a piss poor decision. I've seen the replay several times and every time it looked like the Serb touched first. Then it emerges that he did, but it was Phelps' force that won it! The Serbs even appealed the decision but had it thrown out!

Absolute joke.

That aside, Bolt was phenomenal. Fastest ever 100m, biggest margin, and he didn't try for the last 15m!

But for me, biased as I am, Chris Hoy was awesome. To change your event and still win by that margin is brilliant. He is truly the King of Scots - officially our best ever Olympian!

Where did you hear this? I've not seen it. Those touch pads.. they don't lie! I also thought it looked like the Serb had got there first, but it was mighty, mighty close. I've not heard that they've managed to prove Phelps touched second.

Hoy is superb - almost unbeatable.

NBC here has been showing the reply, and they keep saying it's clear he touched first and it keeps making me think Cavic did. Oh well...

Well what brave marathon runners we have, we should all be proud of all three them. Outstanding, if a little optimistic for Paula considering the amount of training she's been able to complete. You know what, why shouldn't she be back for 2012? It's the one thing she hasn't won, the one thing she's got left to do.

Hmmm. I'm not so sure about that. It cost British Athletics - which is mostly funded by taxpayers money - a phenomenal amount of money to send Paula Radcliffe to the Olympics, and not only was she very obviously unfit to compete, she stood in very real danger of making her injury much much worse (which apparently it seems she may well have done). Trying (and possibly failing) to put that right is another massive cost to be borne by - who? Well, not her. I do hope she makes it back, but competing on a barely healed stress fracture is one way to make this doubtful.

I don't have a problem with public funding of British sports at all, but this does seem to have been a wrong decision, based on sentiment rather than reality.

My main problem with British Athletics is that it seems that for every serious, committed and talented athlete living off public and Lottery funding, there are ten happy-to-be-also-rans who know they will never win anything, and will never really try to, but are happy to take the money knowing that its a hell of a lot better than having to get a proper job. The Lottery are going to review their funding arrangements of individual athletes, and I hope this (typically British?) attitude is the thing they are trying to tackle.

Contrast and compare to the way British cycling, or rowing, or even swimming is run - there's a big difference, and it's reflected in the medal tables.

Its was Gaby Logan I heard say the stuff about Phelps on the highlights show yesterday evening.

Some effort from the lightweight skulls this morning. But some what eclipsed by what the chinese women's fours just did to bury British hopes in that event. Wow.

OK, good point. But don't you think if you thought you had a sniff of winning the one prize you've not yet won in your field, which happens to represent the pinnacle of your sport, you would be putting your name down? Surely, then, it's up to Team GB officials to tell her she can't compete, rather than letting her go through that.

This is the only thing she wants now and I think if she has to take a four year sabbatical to nurse that injury back to full health, she'll be more than prepared to do that. It'd be sweet justice for it to happen in London. Too much to hope for? I don't think so.

She didn't have a sniff though, and she knows she didn't. And I agree, I can see why she would have wanted to go - it was up to UK Athletics and the BOC to tell her that she wouldn't be selected. Her sentimentality is understandable - theirs isn't. I hope London isn't too late for her, she has such a brilliant marathon history, an Olympic title really ought to be in there too.
