My flatmate got his unlocked and he now has a pay as you go sim card in there. He thinks it's the best option - all the features of the iPhone but with no expensive contracts.

How much does he pay for web access though?

And that must be the original iPhone, not the new one - I don't think anyone has unlocked it yet.

He doesn't bother paying for web access - our house, campus and pub all have free wi-fi. And that's where he can be found most of the time. :D

I'd imagine the prices would be extortionate though.

Am I right in thinking though that if you unlock it you can't update any of the software because Apple have bugged the updates to * up unlocked phones?

Or did I dream it?

Apple can be very underhanded when it comes to it's products, when they first released ipods, the brought out the biggest one (can't remember the facts and figures so i'll make that up) say, the 15gig one and charged £200 for it. Left that in the market for say 3 months. Then they brought out a bigger capacity model, say 40 gig, put that on the market for the same price as the 15 gig one was, cut the price on the 15 gig to, say £140 than brought out a lower ended model out for £100. Its quite typical for them

Thats one of the two top reasons I dislike them. The other one is that I have never owned or tried to use an Apple product that actually worked properly - and even if, after much chicanery, the DID work, they never really did everything they promised.

I have been having a similar argument on another site and I really can't be bothered getting into it on here as well. Basically, I've never owned an apple product for those very reasons. I did feel a bit dirty on friday when I was downloading iTunes but having played with this thing over the weekend, I am still very happy with it.

Oh yea don't get me wrong, I've owned apple stuff for about 15 years now - I'm typing this on a G5 actually... But they are very underhanded, but I suppose if your main rival is microsoft, you have to be

And I'm not trying to start an argument - I know people who think their Apple stuff is brilliant, so they are obviously doing something right. I've just never quite managed it myself!

I was reading in a magazine at the weekend that Car Phone Warehouse are throwing in a free laptop, to entice customers into mobile contracts.

I hate apple products.

I have an ipod but only because my ex got a white ipod and decided she wanted a black ipod, so I got her white ipod so she could have a black ipod!

Stupid really as it was always in a case anyway....and the case is black!

My mrs has an apple laptop and thinks its the dogs bollocks because thats what they used when doing her degree because its "better" for doing design stuff apparently

I think thats just business though. You make the most of your products whilst you can, then bring out a better product......then an even better product

its all about the profit margins and keeping the shareholders happy!

If nobody bought the product then they would drop the prices I guess! But consumers are very fickle

I'm not a big fan of apple, but I really don't mind them. I'd probably get an iPhone if I needed to change my phone.

Having said that, I don't own an iPod. I've got a Zune instead. That's the Microsoft equivalent of an iPod for those that don't know. But that's just because I'm a geek who had to have something you can't get buy in the UK! Well, that and it has a built in radio and it makes it dead easy to switch over to my own tunes when the playlist kicks in.

They are bringing out a PAYG sim card for iPhone but not till later this year. This is the first Apple product I've owned and despite a few technical hitches. On the whole I love it. It does everything I need it to and more.
