Since the start of the year the site has been running the tagline 'Celebrating ten years of chrismoyles.net', commemorating the fact that I launched the site back in 1998. As of last month - the 1st June to be exact – that milestone was reached and the site moved into its eleventh year of existence.

1998 seems like yesterday, but saying 'ten years' seems like so long ago. To give you a flavour of just how long that is, we're talking about a time where web browsers and the 'Yahoo' homepage looked like this:

If you tried to use Google, you would have seen this:

Visiting Radio One led you to this:

If you were on the cutting edge of mobile phone technology, you wouldn't be talking about the imminent launch of the iPhone 3G, you'd be going crazy for the Nokia 5120:

And, if you were one of the few who chose to visit the site dedicated to the newest early morning Radio One recruit, then heading to http://welcome.to/moylesworld would take you to the below – the initial incarnation of what later became chrismoyles.net:

Things were certainly very different back then, Moylesworld was hosted on the free webspace that came along with my ISP connection. Unlike now, your only connection option was dial-up and you had to pay for the privilege of being a customer of any particular ISP. This meant the site was pretty hard to keep up and running, and even harder to keep up to date.

I used to record the early show, which was initially from 4am – 7pm on a cassette – and then listen to the speech later that morning, making a quick note of anything worth saving. Clipping those excerpts to MP3 and then uploading them to the site was a long and laborious process. Compare that to the system in place today – a custom written fully automated recording and clipping system with an easy-to-use web interface (courtesy of the technical genius of 'console')– and you can see how much things have changed.

From the humble beginnings described above, chrismoyles.net now uses the resources of seven web servers to provide almost half a million downloads per month. The site serves more than 2.1 million pages per month and approaches half a Terabyte of monthly data transfer ... and still, like the day it was launched, is free for you to use requesting no donations or subscriptions.

Who knows if the place will be here in ten more years ... I certainly didn't think it'd be here now. As time ticks by and the site becomes more and more of a resource for people to find out about Chris, his radio show and his television activities, it becomes harder and harder to close it.

As the officially unofficial site, chrismoyles.net plugs a nice gap in what Radio One can offer you (and what his management company should offer you), to hopefully bring you a site you'll come back to visit and even perhaps contribute to through our forum or news submission page.

It's a bit self-congratulatory .. but happy 10th anniversary me .. and thanks for visiting.

I find it astounding that you put in this much effort whilst presumably holding down a full time job! And for FREE. I wish I could show this level of dedication to, well anything really!

Happy 10th and heres to another 10. I think Mr M owes you a pint or two!

Christ, I remember the five year celebrations. I've not been here since the inception though.

Congratulations.

I'm a very recent arrival, so wasn't even around for the 9th year celebrations. I do want to say thank you though, as in my brief time here I've found the site entertaining and informative!

Your dedication is oustanding. Congratulations on the 10th anniversary - here's hoping there'll be many more!

Thanks Chris! I agree that this is exactly what a Moyles fan needs, which neither Radio 1 nor Moyles' management provide. So 10/10 for your effort and everyone else who contributes to the site. I have greatly enjoyed belonging to the site for a year and a half, and I hope to stay for many more.

Couldn't agree more.

Thank you Chris, for creating an absolutely fabulous site! I really hope you're proud of yourself!

Has anyone else noticed that when new postings are made, the area highlights in yellow? I just noticed this this morning!

No, I just noticed it actually doesn't. When you roll the mouse over any area, it is highlighting in yellow.

I remember the internet when THAT was new...

I also remember the Moyles World site looking like that. I've been on the internet a long, long time apparently... even if I've not been on this forum for long!

I don't come here as often as I should but I'd also like to say congratulations and thanks for 10 years of existence (of which I've been around for ... not 10) You should be proud of an achievement like this - to keep it up and running for free for so long and growing so much.

Well done!

I'd personally like to say a big thankyou to Chris for all his hard work on the site, plus a big thanks for everyone who has participated in developing this site, whether they be those who have written show reviews or especially those who have recorded the sound clips for people to download.

Here's to the next 10 years (and more!)

I think I said this a few months back when you posted something along these lines, Chris, but I really date myself by saying I frequented "Moyles World" quite a bit starting in 1999. It's been great to watch it turn into this brilliant resource of clips and news. My generic MP3 player is filled with great Moyles moments of the last decade. Thank you for every last one of them and for assuring that every long flight and drive I must make is filled with entertainment! I'd also like to thank Console for all his tinkering and hard work that keeps your site up and running smoothly. Congratulations!

Yup - well done to Mr Harris and cheers for providing the service for free and without advertising as well! It's a long time you have been keeping this going. You should get SOME sorta recognition - a free Moyles book or summit. Someone send him a book goddammit!

I suppose a token gesture should be made to Console as well since I suppose he puts in a LITTLE bit of effort to keep the forum running and get the sound clips up etc. Just a token gesture mind you. 8)

There may well be other behind the scenes that I don't know about - if so, cheers to you as well.

Me too, and I'd still use it today (although I might look a bit of a berk). I'm downgrading at my next 'upgrade' time. I've got and don't use mobile internet and email. It'd actually be nice just to have a phone, and if it had the snake game that'd be cool aswell!!

I'd like mobile internet... That may be my next "buy" when I choose to upgrade.
