The alarm clock would certainly do the trick.


My mom and dad used to have a teasmaid/alarm clock. The bell on that was like freight train! Would leave you feeling all shakey and on edge all day!

There's a clock you can get which I read in a magazine with a thing that slips under your pillow so when the alarm goes off it vibrates. Apparently you can dial up the vibration settings so much it feels like an earthquake trying to tip you out of bed!

Still wouldn't work for me, the only thing that can wake me up without fail is "Brand New Cheesy Song" - I've become conditioned to it now.

Its all a load of nonsense. Any reasonable sound will wake any person - the variable is what the individual does about having been woken. If you choose to get up, you get up. If you choose to pretend you haven't heard it and go right back to sleep, you will - and you might not remember being woken, but you were. Everyone is woken many times during any given night, your brain recognises whether the stimulus which woke you is significant or not, and you will either immediately fall asleep again (and be unaware in the morning that this has happened) or fully wake. As long as you have a sound set as your alarm which is recognisable to you as meaning "its time to get up", your brain will recognise that and do its best to wake you fully - but if you choose to ignore it, you will go back to sleep. It's a choice, nothing else.

It was in Stuff magazine a few months back, one of my customers works for the publishing company and gets me free magazines from time to time. I love being in a bookies, I can get hold of almost anything for next to if not actually nothing....

I see what you're saying Yudwuk, but surely, as with anything, every person is different? Surely it depends on how deep a sleeper you are? I sleep very deep and the trouble with the alarm is, though it wakes me, it doesn't wake me sufficiently that I actually realise that I really need to get up now. It takes a few snoozes to do that.

our alarm is my mobile phone... its ok IF i remember to set it... other morning i turned if off instead of pressing snooze, I woke up at 8:45.... had to be at work at 9.... all good fun! Also it only does snooze a certian amount of times then switches it self off, so you have to be awake by then... otherwise it prooves to be a problem!

Apparently not, but I have to say I don't know how it all works myself. The stuff I wrote came from someone I know who is a clinical specialist in respiratory illness, and did a study on sleep problems and disorders as part of her subsequent PhD (thus making her one of the growing number of nurses in this country entitled to be addressed as "Doctor"!).

I hate getting up in the morning, really hate it, but I hate rushing around in a panic and being late for things even more, so I get up when the alarm goes off. If you're awake enough to hit the snooze button, you're awake. If you go back to sleep, its because you've given yourself permission to do so.

As long as you aren't late for work every morning (which I assume you aren't), does it really matter? I'm not trying to have a go!

Hmm.. but I don't purposefully give myself permission, I do it in a subconscious state.

It just got a bit more critical, as I need to be out of the bathroom in time for my dad's girlfriend's son to get ready for work.

This is what I said to Kate - she replied that whilst it feels like an unconscious action, it isn't, and it falls into the category of behaviour classified as "habitual" and we therefore have control over it if we choose to take it. She then proceeded to explain the experiments she had done (over an 18 month period) which demonstrate this, and other fascinating aspects of sleep behaviour. If you are having trouble with insomnia, I will get her to record it for you, because it is a cure in and of itself.

I really can sleep through anything....

I slept through the Hurricane while next door had a tree fall through their house. I've slept through my alarm going off for an hour at a really loud volume with the neighbours banging on the wall. It's not a case od waking up and deciding not to get up, I just don't hear them.

The first thing I know is I'm turning over and it's waaaay past the time I should be up.
