Former BBC Radio 1 breakfast DJ Kevin Greening has died at the age of 44, his agent has confirmed.

"He died peacefully in his sleep last night," Chris North of broadcasting company Wise Buddah said.

He said no further information was available about the death of the DJ, who also worked on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Greening, a veteran of many stations, was paired with Zoe Ball on Radio 1's flagship show from 1997 to 1998 and was most recently at Smooth Radio

Was he ill? It's all rather sudden, isn't it?

That's what I was wondering too. There was no mention of HOW he actually died on Newsbeat this morning (so far anyhow).

44, so young. I'm guessing he must have been very ill but not announced it publicly. The news this morning said no cause had been confirmed. RIP.

Yeah, I assumed that they'd not announced a cause cos they didn't want it public, rather than cos they didn't know. Before I heard the bit about him going peacefully in his sleep, I thought it might be suicide. But it's probably not respectful to speculate...

I saw a picture of him taken about four months ago apparently. He has clearly been very ill for some time, so there is no need to speculate - he was ill, and the nature of his illness was a matter for him and his family. Very sad, my thoughts are with the people who loved him.

It could simply be they just don't know the cause of his death yet, and I suspect if that is the case, the information will be released in the next few days/weeks. Until then I agree that any speculation is crass and unnecessary.

Having said that, Kevin Greening was one of the first DJs I listened to on Radio 1. I came for Zoe Ball - only being a youngster and the big name attracted me - but I stayed for Kevin and was really quite sad when he left the breakfast show. Was looking through the freeview EPG a few weeks ago and saw him on Smooth FM and had a listen for five minutes to find he sounded as good as ever. He could easily have slotted in on Radio 2 (although didn't he have quite a falling out at the BBC? I probably have that totally wrong). Very underrated - I bet most people would forget him if asked to list the breakfast show hosts of the past 15 years. A great loss to broadcasting in this country.

RIP

I seem to remember when Freddie Mercury died it took a few days for the cause of death to be announced.

A sad loss. Along with Mark & Lard and an upcoming Chris Moyles he was one of the top three broadcasters of the late 1990's. His Radio 1 shows were always worth a listen. He was always quite unassuming as well.

RIP

In the article Jono posted, it says that as well as a DJ on Smooth FM, he was a continuity announcer on BBC7, so I imagine that if he did, they patched up their differences.

I wasn't really listening at the time he was at Radio 1, so I don't feel able to comment on his broadcasting abilities, however, any death (particularly if it's an early death) is sad. Unless the dead person was a bastard, and it doesn't sound like Greening was in the slightest.

Maybe let the police know about this Yudster, you obviously have something here that is clearly not speculation

They already know. And unlike me, they also know what he was ill with.

My Nana, who was very ill with stomach cancer, was givenm class A drugs (heroin, or diamorphine by its medical name) intravenously for the last week of her life. She died peacefully in her sleep at home. Nothing unusual about that.

I was given morphine (or diamorphine, one of the two) as a pain killer when I burnt my nads.

We had a competition as school once to write a comedic headline for a fake tabloid story.... I really wanted to win so I sent in ten entries hoping that one would win, unfortunately no pun in ten did.
