The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Hey Everyone,

if, like me, you cannot believe that after 20 years the BBC have decided that "faggot" is going to offend someone then PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE click on the link below and sign the petition to have the full version of this fantastic christmas song reinstated.

Lets prove once and for all that we will not be dictated to by the over zealous PC brigade.

Cheers

You're right, two signatures won't do much, but add yours and there will be three, and then four etc etc.

Activity breeds activity.

It might not get them to reinstate the full version, but it will at least show that the listeners do not appreciate being told that they are incapable of deciding for themselves what is and what isn't offensive.

Please sign the petition - it takes seconds, and will make all the difference.

Thanks

Cheers Ezza!!!

Go on - take a few moments out of your time.

By not signing we are effectively telling the powers that be that they can dictate to us what we can and cannot listen to on Radio 1.

Also, remember that this is not a BBC wide ban - JUST RADIO 1!!

Come on people get motivated and sign up

but surely by the time this petition has any effect, christmas will be over. and so there would be no point.

OK, well lets say it's more about the principle than anything else - isn't it worth doing something?

You do realise that in the time it has taken you to write your replies you could have signed the petition yeah?

It doesn't ask for any perconal details other than your name and comments so no worried about data protection.

Don't get all bah humbug on me at christmas time - sign the petition!!!

I do realise that fact yes. And i am in the christmas spirit. I'm listening to christmas songs right now. Including an uncensored Fairytale of New York.

No matter how much it snows, it never seems to grow any bigger. I think tomorrow the snow should be deeper....by Xmas we'll only be able to see Holly's nose sticking out....with a snorkel.......

I don't do petitions. I'm far happier letting people in power decide how my life should be lived. There's far less for me to think or worry about then and I can concentrate on the important things in life.

Precisely. What's next? Rap songs in their full uncensored glory with Kanye west effing and jeffing (as Dom would say) all over daytime radio?

I don't find any of the words in FONY offensive, but some people may not want their small children calling each other "cheap lousy f@ggot" in the playground, so I can see why R1 have taken the decision. Why they've waited 20yrs to do it I have no idea, but hey ho. What would probably be better is if they just don't play the track at all, but then there would probably be a petition to reinstate it to the playlist. You can't please everyone.

You're right, you can't please everyone, and I think Radio 1 have come to quite a good compromise on this, they're playing the song, but muting words that people find offensive.

Personally, I wouldn't care if they didn't play it; I don't think it's that great, it's massively overrated.

Chris is allowed to slate a ringtone, sorry message alert for being gay but they're not allowed to use the F word? It's PC gone mad I tells ya.

Haha - brilliant!

I just love the irony that the word faggot has been used more on radio one now that that song has been censored! Every R1 news bulletin was speaking about it with sound bites from the public. The majority of kids wouldnt have noticed what is one word, used once, in a song played pretty much for one month of the year.
#318560
What irritates me is that we are being TOLD what is and isn't offensive.

I would like to know how many people have had a complaint upheld regarding the word in question in this song?

I very much doubt that any kids would pay enough attention to the song to start calling each other faggots, and frankly having worked in the education system for some years I can guarantee you that kids call each other far more unpleasant, degrading and downright foul things than faggot.

I am not suggesting that all censorship is wrong, but I think it needs to carefully thought out.

If they are going to censor songs, then surely they should censor their own advert that suggests that Radio 1 is the home of black music - isn't that discriminatory also?

What irritates me is that we are being TOLD to sign this petition.

What if we don't agree with you?

Its been really funny as radio 2 have taken the opportunity on everyshow to slag off radio 1 for doing this. I have the misfortune of having to listen to Ken Bruce, Jeremy Vine and Steve Wright and they have all commented today and played the "proper" version. This could either be a stupid * up by radio 1 or what I think that its reverse physcology to get people talking about/downloading Fairytale of New York to keep the X factor song off Christmas number one or maybe im being synical   ??
