I think they clamp down on it because they're not making any money out of it, and would like people to pay them for their intellectual property. It's not a 'real harm', but it is unfortunately fully 'justified' within American copyright law.

Where did you hear that South Park wasn't copyrighted? In America a copyright is automatically granted on any creative works, so unless the creators/TV Studio waived their rights and released it into the public domain then it is copyrighted.

Marionettes? How utterly arbitrary & whimsical. But then you can't see their facial expressions change. That was one of the best parts. I don't see why he can't just animate them differently...?
