The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

It does - it would be a shame in some ways because there are a few regular chatroom users who are not registered members, and it would be a shame to lose them - but they could always register, and even if they didn't, it would still seem the most obvious way forward. But realistically, there are plenty of registerd people who might be quite happy to make a nuisance of themselves in the chatroom, might be doing it already in fact. I think there needs to be a degree of moderation too.

Speaking of moderation, could you not just ban the users when you find them (and I'm saying that to all people that have moderator access in the chatroom).

I think mostly that happens - when there is someone with moderator access in there.

I'd like to put my support forward for having board member access only because it would cut out 80% per cent of the crap. Then distribute the MOD password more widely as Chris suggested (hint hint nudge nudge), and then that should get rid of practically all this rubbish we keep on getting. (Especially with people impersonating others, which is unacceptable).

You can't have both... if board logins are integrated with the chat room, you would need to use your forum username and password to login, that's the point; so you couldn't use a special password to gain moderator access. Presumably, though, moderator status could be given to users on an individual basis.

I don't think it's as important to give people moderator access if board logins are used. Still maybe have a few people, but not loads.

In my opinion wanting to be a moderator is proof enough that you shouldn't be one, on pretty much any board or chat room, obviously that's down to Harris though.

How many people have been banned then? I can't imagine that there are that many people that come into the chatroom to be a nuisance.

You'd be surprised. Truly obscene people - maybe one or two a day. Complete idiots with foul mouths and abusive attitudes (bored schoolkids - thank god its half term) - more. I'm not convinced its a massive problem though - even if there are no mods around, the more regular users can always retreat to a private room if it gets silly - and then they get bored and go away.

Are you banning usernames or IP addresses, because if it's IP addresses then banning entire schools would become very easy and would probably eliminate most of the abusers.

I've got to say that I have had no problems with obnoxious people in the chatroom to date. Anytime I have been in, it's pretty much the usual "faces" from the message board.

Really nasty ones I have banned IPs - but its not a permanent ban is it? I might be mistaken there. Anyway like I said, I really don't see this as a massive issue.

you need to log back in, but you can't do it by putting your username and password in, by clicking chat at the top of the forums.

It's not letting me log in! It's just making noises then stopping there... never mind.

Or you could just press F5, which refreshes the page and invokes the automatic login feature.
