BBC News wrote:Stars line up for Radio 1 album

Kylie Minogue and Lily Allen are among the artists who have recorded cover versions for an album to celebrate BBC Radio 1's 40th anniversary.

The compilation includes versions of 40 songs, one taken from each of the years that the station has been on air.

The Kaiser Chiefs kick off with their rendition of The Move's Flowers in the Rain, the first song played on Radio 1. Other artists include Mika and Keane.

The album, titled Radio 1. Established 1967, will be released on 1 October.

Minogue sings Love is the Drug by Roxy Music (1975), while Allen sings The Pretenders' track Don't Get Me Wrong (1986).

Pirate radio

Other tracks include Robbie Williams' version of The Kinks' Lola (1970), Amy Winehouse's cover of Cupid by Johnny Cash (1969) and Girls Aloud's rendition of Wheatus' Teenage Dirtbag (2001).

Natasha Bedingfield covers Madonna's Ray of Light (1998), while Hard-Fi perform their take on Toxic by Britney Spears (2004).

Tony Blackburn launched BBC Radio 1 on 30 September 1967, in response to the success of pirate stations such as Radio Caroline.

Blackburn remained with the station for 17 years. Other early stars of the station included Terry Wogan, Jimmy Young and the late Kenny Everett.

Yeah, I've got the Live Lounge album, I quite like some of it.

I think this is similar in that it's lots of well-known people doing covers, but most (if not all) of the covers on the Live Lounge album are recent tracks. I think it sounds quite good.

I like how the official Franz Ferdinand site has reported their involvement

Franz have covered David Bowie's 1977 single Sound And Vision for a new compilation marking the 40th anniversary of BBC Radio 1. The album features contemporary artistzzzz covering a song from each year since the station's first broadcast in 1967.

Other highlights include:
(1975) Kylie - Love Is The Drug (Roxy Music)

Oh, and that's about it... and even that track has Calvin-bloody-Harris involved. The whole shabang doesn't appear to be for charity so point your browsers towards Limewire soon, kiddies!

The whole thing looks more like something Radio 2 would do.

I actually think this is gonna be a good album, I'm a fan of unusual cover versions generally. I'll definitely buy it.
