A NATIONAL radio show producer has unveiled a commemorative plaque at her old school before its closure. Rachel Jones, who works on the BBC Radio One's Chris Moyles breakfast show, previously studied at Marlpool First School but returned along with other ex-pupils for the ceremony.

Miss Jones helped to plant a spruce tree in the Marlpool Lane school's grounds and unveiled a stone plaque in front of schoolchildren marking 35 years of education at the site, on July 6. She then opened a showcase of performances by former pupils including a cabaret act, a demonstration by Winspers Martial Arts and Ferndale Fliers FC.

The school's youngsters break up today and return to what will be St Catherine's Primary School, reusing the existing site, in September. Jane Bayley, who has been a Marlpool First teacher for seven years, said: "We've had a lot of support from ex-pupils. Rachel used to attend from about 1979. Her mother worked as a teacher at the school so we've had lots of informal contacts. It's been exciting times at Marlpool because we've had lots of lovely things happening like the setting up of the Eco Club. It's good to know those things will continue," she added.
