boboff wrote:You see I don't Agree, and on watching news Knight last night, this very topic came up, and there the consensus was similar to mine.

I think it was described as BBC engaging in self flagellation, being portrayed as a Russian yelling "beat me beat me" summed it up well for me.

Also do you have to use such strong and offensive terms to offer your opinions "don't talk such utter Balls" etc it really adds little to your post.

Ah taking the moral high ground eh? Highly amusing considering some of the things you have posted on this forum during your time on it.

Regarding the news knight thing, I didn't see the show, but from what you are describing it has seemingly no relevance to the point I am trying to make. All I am saying is making up the winner is neither entertaining nor the right thing to do. It is surely far less hassle and much easier to simply say "technical difficulties" then announce it at a later date. How is creating a fictional winner of any use to anyone, bar creating 2 seconds of potential embarrassment for the production company admiting that a computer failed. Big woop.

I agree that the BBC's reaction of taking every competiton off air since is a mass over reaction but it is, in my view, foolish to suggest they were right to fake winners in the first place.

It was a bit wasn't it !

Still you can try to improve over time can't you ?

With regard to the BBC thing, Really I don't see it as the issue you make out, if it was willy wonkers gold ticket then fair enough, delay it, but to get a tour of a studio etc, when the call was primarily to raise money for charity I don't see it as that big a deal to make out you got a winner.

I agree its not a big deal, but a publicly funded organisation has a duty to stick rigidly to the principle of the thing - and that means it can't afford to do anything which could be construed as misleading or dishonest. I can see how what the BBC have done in response looks a bit extreme, but I'm actually quite impressed that they are really going out of their way to not only do the right thing, but to be seen very clearly to be doing the right thing.

OK, I'm going to rob a bank, but give all the money to charity? Surely nobody will be bothered, because it's for charity...! If they can't even give us an authentic winner how can people even be sure they give the money to charity at all? OK they probably do, because it's the BBC and they wouldn't lie to us...oh wait they just have! It's a slippery slope you see, once trust is lost at a basic level, it's like a crack in a windscreen, it starts off insignifcant and unless dealt with it grows and grows until it breaks.

I agree with Yudster's points. The BBC is still an institution to be proud of, yes they have made mistakes but at least they are dealing with it openly.

Well I can see that from Fish Heads point of view, and from Yudster and Topher agreeing with him, who you then agreed with that actually I can see the point about honesty and integrity being important at the beeb, and charity or not I suppose it is true it should not have happened, Granted I was wrong on that front.

Was it that big a deal, well I suppose so, but life is full of things far more important than this, and as far as the press is concerned it would be nice if they paid more attention to more important things, like drugs, child molestation and gun crime. Some producer cheating on a phone in, it's wrong yes, it not however front page news.

Isn't that the sketch about social classes? With John Cleese and the Two Ronnies? The one where Cleese said something like "I am upper class and I look down on both of them", then Barker says "I'm middle class, I look up on him and down on him" and Corbett chirps "I know my place."

It was great - I preferred Peter Cook's one leg too few though ("I've got nothing against your right leg... the trouble is, neither have you.") I also liked the Parky interview with Mel Smith and Rowan Atkinson as a talking Gorilla. Ah, all before my time but brilliant all the same!

EDIT:

Three Men on Class - lollipop please Yudster!

Yes, but Topher still gets the lolly. Actually, was it The Frost Report, or That Was The Week That Was?

The Frost Report, I'm fairly sure.
