All requests and questions and pleas, so I think Console you are actually wrong on this one.

Yes, those examples are all three (although I calling them a plea is a bit stretching, but meh). There are examples of pleas that aren't questions though, for example: -

"Somebody, HELP!"

A classic plea (for help), and yet not a question. It could be phrased as a question: -

"Will somebody, HELP?"

Notice both the question word at the beginning and the question mark at the end, and how the first example had neither. Both are requests, and yes both are pleas, but only one of them is a question.

Console, Boboff, this is getting close to PM territory.

I'm enjoying reading it though - neither of them actually care enough to deal with it on PM I doubt.

Let's face it tho, what seems to me to be at the heart of the discussion is not the semantics of the word 'plea' but boboff trying to defend S4B.

But a plea from the latin placitum, means a decsion, not a request.

Surely your indication of the word as not a question ommits the phrase please.

Somebody help please ?

A plea in this instance would still be regarded as a question even without the prefix and suffix questioning term and grammer.

Somebody help, if not a question would be a command, if taken lierally, or a plea if you suppose that they are "begging" or "pleeding" for help, they would therefore be asking for assistance, and to ask is "to try tp get a thing by saying that we want it [ie help]; to seek infomation; to put a question"

Charlielovely, what exams are you actually taking? I think you should post your subjects up here, we all have a guess, and whoever gets the most right. We can base our guesses purely on your conduct in here. Go and set up a thread.

Agreed

charlalottie wrote:As a student of english language (ignore the fact I messed the exam up royally) I agree with Boboff.

Thank you.

Sorry Baggie, I agree but sometimes Console makes me sad, and no I don't give a stuff, but if you sometimes are gruff and funny then it's great, and I have commented on this when the big man is, but sometimes it rude, arrogant, offensive, pendantic and frankly uncalled for to pick holes in things just for the apparent need to be seen to be in charge and superior in all ways.

I asked console to show me how to put a picture in my signature on PM, and all I got back was a link to post a picture in a post, not in a signature, I followed the instructions to do it the same way and it didn't work, I found the reply unhelpful and rude, and condesending. As I did the comments made to S4B above.

I know this is taking things way to seriously, but sometimes it just has to be done, especially as we have established that indeed Console is not inflaible, and although he may be right or he may be wrong, as indeed I could be, that we should be able to accept the shades of grey that excist, which could actually mean we were all right to a degree.

Anyway, it's all a bit better quality of debate than the last Viv V Console thing, so in that vain.

Console... your so lovely I'd do you,

Now why don't you just go away

I woke up late and I have a head ache from eating too much Icecream

Better now I have been for a curry, and my Boss wouldn't let me keep my pencil sharpener.

Why don't you just all F Off

Don't Harras me, I'll cry, you horrible fat stupid Boboff.

Better now I have been for a fitting for a wedding dress, the man I am stalking just got a restraining order on me, I can't go within 4 miles of my maths teacher from School now !

It is the same though, it's simply using the img bbCode tags in the signature box field rather than the message body field (as you must have worked out, as you now have an image in your signature).

So you're saying a plea isn't a request.

boboff wrote:A plea in this instance would still be regarded as a question even without the prefix and suffix questioning term and grammer.

So you're now saying that a plea is a question, but as a question is a request this causes a logical paradox. Both of your statements cannot be true.

boboff wrote:Somebody help, if not a question would be a command

Ok, yes.

boboff wrote:or a plea if you suppose that they are "begging" or "pleeding" for help

Again, yes.

boboff wrote:they would therefore be asking for assistance

Technically, they'd be requesting assistance, as they haven't actually asked a question. Example request: -

I request the rest of the day off. (Note how this isn't a question; it may seem to be an odd sentence in a generation that uses phrases like "an' he went shutup' and other such obscurities, but a properly formed one none-the-less)

Example question: -

May I have the rest of the day off? (Again, note the question word 'May' and the question mark at the end, which denotes a question)

Can you switch off signatures in phpbb? I can't find the option to.

It might just be your pc at work? Try it on another computer.

I just looked for that option as well, hence my question about seeing other people's signatures.

You found it rude and unhelpful because I was too busy to walk you through adding images when there was a perfectly good FAQ section on it. If that's how you feel don't bother asking me for help again.

Now this Phpp thing, the picture is on Image Shak would that make a differnce ?

On the FAQ's Console, perhaps if you change them so it say

"to add a picture to a post and into your signature" that would help.

There is a way of doing it on the Avatar which is more "automated"

It may seem obvious, but we have just talked about the pedantics of the word plea, and I am meant to know that if it says post a picture in a message, that this includes doing it in the profile section of your log in when you want t o add a signature, but not the same as if you want to upload an avatar, it's just allot to assume of a simple chap that's all.

And if you are busy, ignore the request until such a time as you can answer with a bit of care and hospitality please.
