This morning, being unable to pick up R1 at one point on the bus, I was tuned into another station, where I heard that there is going to be yet another reality TV show : this time, it will be for people waiting on kidney donations (!!). It will apparently be aired on Dutch T.V., and viewers will be able to vote for which person gets the organs. They are arguing that this is to highlight the shortage of organ donors...

Is this, indeed, one step too far, or do they have a point? Personally, I think I have just heard everything I will ever choose to hear.

I heard about this programme this morning, its going on in Holland I think. I have a friend who is on the priority list for a kidney - she has had one unsuccessful transplant in January this year, and they won't be able to keep her well enough to have another for much longer, so its pretty urgent. She has a little boy, three years old too, and is completely desperate to get well. I called her and asked her what she thought, and if she'd consider doing something like that if it came over here. She said she'd rather die.

I would do whatever it takes - even if it was as degrading as this is. Life is more important I would have thought?

That doesn't mean I agree with this btw.

She said that any scenario where people are being voted out by the public based only on what they see on TV would just add complete humiliation to a scenario which is already a nightmare, and almost impossible to live with. Actually, I think the stress of doing something like that would kill her, but maybe the people they are putting on the show aren't quite as critical yet as she is. I just hope she gets her kidney soon.

Don't worry Topher, she would be on your side! Don't get her started on Dido though, she really really hates her........and thanks. I'll tell her - it might seem strange, but other peoples "good wishes", even complete strangers', do help her to stay positive.

I think the whole idea is perfectly sick! Why would anyone want to watch ill people win the kidney of a man who is not yet dead! This is not entertainment! I can understand people being willing to do anything to get a new kidney but how's the presenter going to tell them that they're this weeks loser....

"so you didn't win a kidney but we'll give you this nice blankety blank chequebook and pen, good luck with your dialysis"(spelling?) The whole thing is disgraceful!

Its a woman giving away her kidney isn't it? I guess she has agreed to this but a terminally ill woman has to choose between people pleading their case. What are they going to do - show pictures of their family and bring in their kids?

I saw this on the news today, it's weird that they try and justify it by saying it highlights a lack of kidney donors. Too many people drink and drive, but you wouldn't do a reality programme encouraging people to do that in order to highlight the issue, would you.
