Have any of you read "The Inheritors" by William Golding (the guy that wrote Lord of the Flies)?

It tells the story of the fall of neanderthals and the rise of man. It is told soley from the point of view of one of the dumber neanderthals and how he sees the world. Its an interesting take on how they, with their limited understanding at the best of times, explain things like the seasons and the weather. They didn't know how to make fire so they kept some alight all the time and almost worshiped it and the person who looked after it.

Its a weird book to get your head around, but it got me a B in higher english, so I'll sing its praises.

Also, if I'm here to learn how not to get in the doghouse, tonight I failed.

Well, Mrs Topher took us out for a meal and I, not having enough time to go home first, forgot a change of clothes this morning (I'm half asleep in the mornings at the best of times.) It wasn't a posh restaurant but at the same time, in my England polo shirt and trainers, I didn't really look like I'd made the effort. 'Twas entirely my fault, but I don't know how many more times I can apologise... I do feel terrible about it.

Nah, she's in Wolverhampton playing table tennis now - I'm home cos I'm going to my brother's 18th birthday dinner, which is why she took me out (I was disappointed not to go to Wolverhampton). I will be taking her out though (after Thursday, when I get paid.)

I also find viv "odd" (not weird, not strange) - but we are all stuck here in the middle of our own backgrounds and experiences, and we have to deal with them with whatever we have - and what each of us has is different too. Viv is a product of her life in the same way we all are - and yes, I accept the influence of individual conscious determinism is important to, but my point is that we each have a different set of tools with which to apply it. She is different - but that doesn't mean the reast of us are all the same.

Why are some people so eager, almost desperate, to believe in something greater than what they already have, with no evidence what-so-ever and usually with evidence to the contrary?

Because it explains things simply and easily.

It makes sense why thousands of years ago we end up inventing various religions to give an explanation to things that we didn't understand:

Why does it get dark and light and why does it do it at the same time every day, but different times throughout the day?
What is the wind?
What is the rain?
Where do these things come from?
Whats the sun and the moon?
How do they move?

Thing is we have answered just about every question that religion used to explain for us except the big two:

What was here before the big bang and what happens when you die?

Thats why I think people still cling to a religion - coz it can easily answer questions that they maybe don't know the answer to or perhaps give them hope in some manner.

A few of my friends are quite religious and I do sometimes find myself quite jealous that I don't share their beliefs. Sometimes, I think it would make life a lot easier to deal with.

I was at a friends funeral a few years ago, a young guy that was killed in a car crash. It was pretty upsetting all in all but I was kinda glad that the family seemed to find some comfort from the funeral and the mass that went with it. From an outsiders point of view, it sorta came across that it was almost like a ready made guide book about what to do in this situation. I would imagine that because of the guidelines already in place, it would give the family a lot less to think about and let them just grieve.


Religion is something that intrests me quite a bit, mainly cos I don't understand how anyone can have so much faith in something. That may say more about me than anything else though.

I get the impression that most of them are fannies though, and arguing with fannies gets boring very quickly.

Unless I am drunk, in which case, I am normally on a par with them.
