I'd say Buffalo Bill is based on a real character as well... He seems quite close to Ed Gein. As for Hannibal, I doubt there's any one person who he was based on, he's too complicated a character, it's likely a few people. However, there are plenty of examples of real murderers and psychos that aren't 'chavs' - John Haigh for one, or, more recently, Harold Shipman.
Also, I've had previous experience of meeting via the internet, which was referenced recently by someone. Anyone who would like to is free to search for where I posted it, I can't be arsed. Having said that (if anyone does find it) I'd tend to agree with Nicola's arguments, that as long as you take all precautions and know what the risks are there's nothing wrong with it.
