I have ALWAYS wondered WHY in this country there is such a FUSS over the Winter weather !! We live in a cold country, so why is it that people expect it to be 30 degrees outside in January/February, etc...

Also, why is it that every time there is a hint of bad weather, it's total panic stations (!). The railway system goes down, etc., etc., etc...

I remember being on holiday in Iceland back in 1991 (in December) ... during the night there was a heavy snowfall, the Icelandic people got up, put extra layers of clothes on, efficiently cleared the snow away, and just got on with their day with limited fuss.

In this country, the snow winds up on "Newsbeat".

BTW, there is no snow today in Ayrshire, and your's truly is currently basking in the sunshine. :-)

People often say this, "why do we panic so much, why is it so dramatic, why does the country grind to a halt when there's a hint of snow".............. it's untrue really............ the south of England grinds to a halt when there's bad weather. The rest of us just get on with it.

And I thought people that came from Yorkshire were major panic-people (as well as being mean). ha ha :-)

That's bollocks, we've had it worse than the rest of the country this time round and we're getting on with it - it's no big deal.

No big deal? It's the main news item on every bulletin, top story on the BBC web-site, half the schools seem to be closed, so are number of roads and (Moyles related) it was chatted about for pretty much the first half hour of the show.

I know the south (I count you as a midlander Topher) has had it allot worse, in fact there's none up here. But all I was saying is, when it's consistent across the country, there seems to be more of a fuss made by those down there.

OK its being talked about a lot, what I meant was (schools aside, which by the way, is ridiculous) it's no huge disruption as long as you leave a bit of extra time, drive carefully and beware of the idiots on the road (but you have to do that anyway).

I have no idea why our school is closed, I'm sure everyone could have easily got there. Still, I ain't complaining. I think they've only shut it cos it's so close to half term and they want an extended holiday. Lets hope it keeps it up for tomorrow.

Oh, and by the way, why do the grit lorries have to ruin it for everyone? I'm sure everyone would be much happier if they didn't feel they had to venture out, but with all the roads being gritted people don't feel like they have valid enough excuses. Boo to the gritters! Let everyone have the day off and be done with it!

There's no valid excuse even if the gritters haven't been out; it amused me this morning, people revving far too much and then turning the wheel at the last minute and wondering why it didn't have any effect. Then, because they're not turning, they turn the wheel even more! Then they end up getting out of the tracks that have already been made by cars before them and before you know it they're all over the place. Rubbish.

We don't get snow that often either in this country so we never ever get prepared for it hence the panic stations! Tho saying that, my train this morning was only delayed by 5 mins and even better it was empty where people decided to just say they couldn't get into work!!

I don't claim to be an expert, but I certainly don't panic; this is not the two foot of snow they get in some countries.

The vast majority of the UK experiences snowfall only very occasionally. We live in a temperate climate, not a cold one, snow is unusual. Why should we be accustomed to dealing with something which only affects a handful of us more than once every seven years or so? Personally I hate the bloody stuff.

Its cold. Its wet. It makes doing anything you need to do more difficult, and often dangerous. It messes everything up. What's to like?!

I've put in for a sound request, when chris asked everyone to text Dom to 81199 at 20 to 9 this morning, had me in fits "DOM..Does your head need gritting?" "DOM..Should I still go for my picnic?"

i love snow too and i didn't even get a day off work from it today!! What's not to like about it? Its only dangerous if you ain't careful, like some idiots on the a13 this morning, deciding that they can still do "70mph" in the snow!!

It doesn't matter how careful you are, if one of those arsehole is on the same road as you, you're in trouble. Snow is a pain in the arse and I hope it melts as quickly as possible.

You always have to be careful of idiots on the road, just a bit more careful in the snow.

I have never noticed a "temperate" climate, yuds. It's just plain in-your-face cold ..
