After 49 years, the last ever edition of Grandstand will air on our screens tommorrow on BBC Two, it was expected to finish in 2009 but bosses have decided to put it forward as they feel the demise is now ready, however there will still be Sport on a Saturday Afternoon on BBC One but with the Sports being programmes in their own right which begins with the Six Nations next week.

The big question i`ve had since they announced it is why??

If they are still going to have sport stranded through Saturday afternoon why not do it all under a known brand such as Grandstand. They can tweak the format all they like!

Grandstand was no more an out of date concept than Match Of The Day.... which if you consider in FA cup weekends they show more than 1 match and the highlights in one day under the same banner there isn'n A match of the day at all!

I think the BBC is now weary of tweaking formats of known brands/shows after what happened with Top Of The Pops... despite the fact that it worked specatacularly with Top Gear.

I did watch Grandstand a lot in the old days but I will miss it a bit and I still think the change will turn out to be good.

Just found this on the Have Your Say bit of the BBC news site, couldn't help but agree wholeheartedly:

Unfortunately, there are enough dumb people in the UK - dim enough to want to pay the extra to watch it all on SKY TV. If the Sports 'package' costs around £35 a month, then the BBC cannot realistically complete with it's licence funds. It doesn't stop there though, because the super matches are scrambled yet again, then you have to pay yet again don't you? Fine, as long as you want to keep paying through the nose, personally, I don't and would like ALL of it to remain on the Beeb.

To be honest I would much rather watch a football match on Sky Sports then the BBC just because of the commentary available on Sky. I don't really rate any of the BBC pundits etc, and I find that the service on Sky just seems a lot more better even with the adverts and breaks.

Apologies, I rate Lineker, Hansen (occasionally) and Wright, and of course Lawrenson (because he's so funny sometimes) but I find Motson too boring, he doesn't seem to know what he is talking about especially if you compare it to someone like Martin Tyler/ Andy Gray over on Sky.

John Motson is appalling. The Sky commentaries are slightly more bearable than most. I don't mind the BBC studio pundits. Lineker, Hansen and whoever else they wheel out, but their commentators are dreadful. Martin Tyler and Andy Gray are definintley head and shoulders over anything the BBC or any other channel can find.

Doesn't make him any good. His reputation was built in the days when the only competition was someone's grandad on ITV. Sky Sports came along and showed up all previous football coverage for what it was - crap.

Murray Walker made mistakes (a lot of them) but he was still a legend. I would miss him if I still watched F1.

Murray Walker lives a mile from me, occasionally see him enjoying lunch in the local pubs. I had to double take the first few times I saw him but now not so much of a novelty. Would love to hear a cry of "It's GO GO GO!" though for nostalgic purposes.
