I know how old she is. She's 17, although that's quite a bit younger than me. I know people with the same age gap though, so I don't think it's too much of a problem.

Age gaps per se aren't a problem, it's how old you are in relation to her; for example, if you're 20 and she's 15, that's quite wrong. If you're 30 and she's 25 it's a completely different ball game.

How old are you?

25. To be honest though, I'll admit I'm quite immature for my age.

mmm, all of a sudden this seems like a serious discussion, im not sure I can cope with this!

Sidders wrote:I don't know. I'm just really naive. I completely fell in love with girl in question before I'd even told her how I felt about her. Hence, unrequited love.

I have a tendency to do this, and every time, I know the way my heads going (nae puns!) but I still go along with it!

You been out with this lass, or have you just been staring across the room with your tounge hanging out? (I knew I couldnt cope!)

Age gaps. Shouldn't matter. Much of the time, don't, but you never really forget about it...... Also I think its easier if the older one is the man. Hence my insecurity on the subject!

I agree with the Older Man, younger female being ok, Mrs Boboff is 7 years my Junior, and now as I consider retiring/getting a better work life balance she has dropped the sprogs who go to school not and is intent on training as a nurce to keep me in Blackthorn. It's nice that way round, I think as you get older you learn to have a relationship through communication and not always having to have the last word ( Ball Bag take note ) which is mature. However what ever age a bloke is 17 is a nice age for a partner !

Come on, that's harsh. I'm a nice, honest bloke and would never ill-treat a woman.

I've never been out with her, and I think that's what's making moving on even more difficult than it should be; because I'll never know what it could have been like. If we'd have gone out and it didn't work then I'm sure I'd have got over it quite quickly. I still think I may have a chance in the long run, but now I realise that I've got to get over this obsession I have with her, because she's never going to go out with anyone like that.

*sigh* always a tricky one - I take it you are friends with her? If not, then stop fretting and ask the girl out otherwise you'll never know.

If you are, I suppose its the lesser of two evils, do you ask her out and risk the friendship or do you decide to move on in order to make sure it lasts?

I suppose as long as she doesnt know about the "obsession" then it wouldnt matter. Just don't ask her out on Monday and expect a family of four by Thursday!

She knows how I feel I'm afraid. She's still sort of OK being mates, but she knows how crazy I am for her so it's a pretty strange and icy relationship at the minute.

Well, try and be her friend. Don't be over bearing, or intimidating (which you might do without realising it).

easier said than done im sure!

I think if you're a 25 year old guy and want to go out with a 17 year old girl, it sort of depends what stages of life you are at. I mean it's legal, but if she's still in school and living with her parents, they might find it a bit weird and you might get a few comments about it from people. Having said that though, when I was 15/16 some girls in my year had boyfriends who were 23, 24... up to 28, which seemed weird to me.

I'm 18 and my boyfriend is 24. I don't think that's a problem now that I'm a student at University but if I was still at school it would seem weird. I guess it's a problem when one of you is looking for something more committed and the other is younger so not looking for the same kind of thing. But I will cross that bridge if I come to it, or something.

No, hang on, you're getting this all wrong. I'm 25, the girl i really want to go out with is 23. It doesn't seem like she's interested though, so the second best is a girl who happenes to be 17.

And the 23 year old knows you like her? Why not just ask her outright?

The 23 year old is the one who knows about the obsession. Which is with her. And they have the icy friendship based on him being obsessed and her trying not to notice.

Sidders, you are complicated. Good luck.
