Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles said on air that the moon has more atmosphere than Norwich.

By NAOMI CANTON, Norwich Evening News.

Come and have a go if you think you're lard enough - that was the message to larger-than-life DJ Chris Moyles whose ill-informed comments have upset most of Norwich.

The Radio 1 Breakfast Show presenter said on air he would rather live on the moon than visit our great city - claiming there was more atmosphere on the moon.

His comments have topped those of motormouth Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson, who said Norfolk people did not know the difference between a tractor and a Ford Capri.

But city council leader Steve Morphew threw down the gauntlet to Mr Moyles, and said he would like the BBC DJ and his entourage to visit to our city.

“He can bring the Radio 1 show with him and we can show them how much atmosphere there is.”

However, not everyone was prepared to give the roly-poly entertainer safe passage into the city. Rita McCluskey, who runs the Adam and Eve in Bishopgate, said: “Norwich is probably better off without Chris Moyles. I would not waste my time listening to his show. Norwich is a unique historic city with a fantastic atmosphere. There is nothing like it.”

David Adlard, who owns former Michelin-starred restaurant Adlard's in Upper St Giles, said: “Okay, it's not London, the tempo is slow, but that's the reason many people want to live here. We're close to the countryside and the beach. It's a village atmosphere in a city.”

Steve Bunce, manager of Chapelfield, said: “It's easy for people to criticise what they have not experienced. Norwich's shopping offer is difficult to beat.”

Julian Foster, chairman of the Central Norwich Residents' Forum, said Norwich had always been a city that people joked about. He added: “If Moyles would rather go to the moon, I think he should.”

A spokesman for Mr Moyles told us: “It was a tongue-in-cheek comment said in complete humour; no offence was intended.”

Oh for goodness sake.....why are people so touchy? Still at least as well as all the things Moylesy told us about Norwich, we now also know that its inhabitants don't have a sense of humour. At all.

But - I have to say, Norwich is very good for shopping. Surprisingly so.

Isn't it cruel how journalists twist what's been said? This story could have been posiitive. And... spin....

Fly me to the moon and let me play among the stars - that was the message to DJ Chris Moyles whose humorous comments have awoken a new audience for himself in Norwich.

The Radio 1 Breakfast Show presenter said on air he would rather live on the moon than visit our great city - claiming there was more atmosphere on the moon.

Julian Foster, chairman of the Central Norwich Residents' Forum, who said Norwich had always been a city that people joked about.

City council leader Steve Morphew said he would like the BBC DJ and his entourage to visit to our city.

“He can bring the Radio 1 show with him and we can show them how much atmosphere there is.”

However, not everyone was pleased at the councillor's invitation. Rita McCluskey, who runs the Adam and Eve in Bishopgate and who doesn't listen to the Chris Moyles Show, said: “Norwich is probably better off without Chris Moyles. I would not waste my time listening to his show."

Steve Bunce, manager of Chapelfield was eager to comment on how (he feels) Norwich's shopping offer is difficult to beat. What that has to do with it, we'll never know.

To answer your smiple question... No.

His bosses know he did nothing wrong, and it's free publicity. Just more people to listen to his £15-per-air jingles.

I agree it's free publicity, all I'm saying is it needn't have been negative, but I suppose that's how the news is.

than visit our great city

To be fair Norwich isn't great, I live there and its a slow place at the best of times.

Moyles is a joker you shouldn't worry about it :?

Where would be be without Colemans Mustard though, and Deliegh Smith, Norich should be just proud of the fact that it's two most famous things can only be taken in small doses, and both predictably arn't funny at all.

Chris and Leeds, famous for there witty Castle and being near Sheffield, which makes all the Tea spoons in the word are conversely Hilarious !

Plymouth is a port, as is Waddestons

Being a immigrant from London, I entered Norwich 17 years ago and yes some parts of the area has no atmosphere but it is improving and becoming a great place to live.
We have two (count them two) shopping centres, Castle Mall (situated underground below the Castle..who'd have guessed) and the much now publicised Chapelfields which even has a Ben and Jerry's ice cream shop !!! how upmarket is that)

The nightlife is pretty good too with loads of clubs and pubs especially down Riverside.

I am sure Chris meant it in jest as most things and I am amused and how typically blinkered the response from Ms Canton was. I agree the local newspaper should have spun the story and that would have done Norwich and indeed Moyles a lot more benefit.
I feel a young reporter trying to make a name for herself has not done a whole heap of good for the face of Norwich and its many atmospheric attributes.

I would invite Chris up here in a flash and show him the many faces of Norwich (well maybe not all of them) and I am sure he'd still rip the piss...thats him and his nature and I wouldnt change that for the moon.

I think Chris should come up and see Norwich for himself. It really is an awesome city. Maybe Aled could do one of his city guides. He could have a swim in our Sportspark Olympic sized swimming pool!
What do we have? We have Colman's Mustard, the only Delia Restaurant in the World, and of course Norwich City Football Club..... well, they might have dropped out of the Premiership but they are the only British team to have beaten Munich in the Olympic Stadium. Not only that, but until recently, we were the only city in the UK to have a trample club - a club where women trample on men. The club shut down recently though due to a lack of trade but a top notch lapdancing club Spearmint Rhino has just arrived…..So it’s a city with history, art, culture, a nightlife and a fetish scene. Something for everyone I guess.....

Well, if Ms Canton's article was a publicity stunt, I think it has backfired in that it has focused attention on the wrong thing. Its getting lots of attention, but the focus is what a tit she made of herself really - and as nood pointed out, it could have been so much better.

By the sound of it she is a huge fanny of Chris Moyles, having mentioned his Aled's Guide feature, which happened in Germany, and they love mustard too.

Many have said this, and all have been wrong. There is a lot of publicity out there that people wish they had never had.......
