RADIO 1 star Chris Moyles is getting £75,000 on top of his massive salary - just for playing his own jingles. Chris, 32, picks up £630,000 a year - but has a staggering deal in which the Beeb pays out £15 each time he airs a ditty he wrote.

And the motormouth DJ makes sure his short tunes hit the big notes - as he broadcast them 5,000 times in the past year alone.

One jingle brazenly brags: "Chris Moyles on Radio 1/He ain't good-looking but hey, he's rich." But last night his money-spinning contract was sparking fury among MPs and watchdogs.

John Whittingdale, head of the Commons Culture select committee, blasted: "The BBC is already paying him a hefty salary and he is able to earn even more at the touch of a button.

"There seems to be a clear conflict of interests here and it seems completely inappropriate."

Mediawatch chief John Beyer also branded it a conflict of interest and added: "BBC governors should investigate this matter with immediate effect.

"Mr Moyles has control over how many jingles he plays on his show and therefore determines how much extra he will be paid each day - with no one regulating him.

"Governors must satisfy themselves no malpractice is taking place, which is only right and proper on behalf of licence payers."

Chris composes the quirky clips for his 7am-10am show with specialist firm Music 4. The Performing Right Society - which distributes performance royalties to composers - charges the BBC £15 a time and passes it on to him.

One listener claimed he played his jingles 10 times in just one hour last week. And the Daily Mirror heard them used 19 times during his three-hour show. It is not the first time Beeb chiefs have come under fire over stars' earnings.

There was an outcry when it emerged Jonathan Ross was on an £18million deal and Little Britain pair David Walliams and Matt Lucas had been handed £6million.

Yesterday, the BBC insisted the DJ had done nothing wrong.

A Radio 1 spokesman said: "He writes jingles and receives payment when they are played. This is completely legitimate.

"But we refute any suggestion that he is playing them more frequently."

And a governors' spokeswoman added: "Chris Moyles would be subject to editorial guidelines, which he would have to adhere to."

What a good business plan. I knew he made PRS off the jingles, never realised it was that much.

We were having a discussion on this in class today. I was on Moyles's side - its just clever thinking.

Funny that, after I bought his book, I swear I heard a few coins jingle in my pocket, then one of them rolled out and I couldn't find it, and it seemed to happen the more I turned the pages!

Only kiddin....

Well, if it is exactly as reported in The Mirror, there is a clear conflict of interest. But somehow I doubt it is precisely as they have said. Not that I am implying the Mirror would ever present facts in such a way as to twist the truth or anything, of course I would never wish to imply such an unprecedented example of poor journalistic practice.

Chris often jokes on air about making PRS from his jingles. But I thought it was more like 15p than £15 a time.

Same! I didnt think he made so much, but then again they are funny...

why is it that everyone who doesnt listen has a problem with him? either hes homophobic or he earns too much or he says rude stuff (which sometimes he does o guess..) etc. And how come that in a lot of artlicles it mentions that he's fat? So? What does that have to do with his radio show?
It just irritates me so much when its always about him being overweight becuase they cant think of a better insult

Can you add an option to the poll "I doubt it's actually correct"?

Even if it were true, £75k is only 11% of £630k. The company I work for gives more than that 11% per annum as a bonus, other people get commission, so what's the problem?

Is the Daily Mail trying to say it would be fair not to pay one person royalties when every other artist who's work is played on the BBC gets paid in one way or another?

He's done nothing wrong. It makes good radio, and Chris didn't invent PRS, he's just using it to his advantage. Which to be honest, is good on him. If there is a system in your industry of which you can jump on the bandwagon, they why the hell wouldn't you?

He produces a good show, of which he's added however many millions on listeners.

Again, I say good on him.

P.S. I don't pay my license fee anyway.

HAHAHA.

Thats brilliant. Like anyone would turn that down and say "oh i cant take extra money for playing jingles"

Any one of those editors would jump at the chance.
Its a clever business move.

If he can get away with it, then what's the problem?

People are just so jealous of success. Fools.

Fair play to him, its not like they just appear out of thin air and there is a lot (well some) thought and effort that goes into them

Look at his recent efforts for next years jingles including an orchestra, that doesn't come cheap and will not be paid for by the Beeb

It probably will be. I'm pretty sure Chris will have managed to convince the executive producer that it was necessary for the show.

I bet Steve Wright gets paid per jingle too, and he doesn't put much effort in either seeing as they have been the same for years. Some of his jingles go on for ages too, much longer than Moyles.

Yep. :)

>> Fat profit <<
Play as you earn on Radio 1

As he keeps telling us, Chris Moyles has a
very successful Radio 1 show, for which he
earns a reported 630k. Chris also has
co-writing credits on 66 different jingles,
for a company called Music 4, who provide
a lot of the jingles for his show. So
every time Moyles cues up one of those annoying
jingles he could be making some extra cash!
On one day this week, we did an unscientific
survey of what was played on the show in an hour:

Jingles: 10
Self-sung songs: 1 (The Davina McCall song)
Records played: 5

Nice work if you can get it...

75K that'll keep him in beer and kebab money for a few weeks. Wonder how much Carrie and Rachel are on??

IIRC its £15 a minute. Royalties should be paid in the same way regardless of who wrote them.
