Radio1 DJ Chris Moyles and former Muslim Council of Britain leader Sir Iqbal Sacranie will fight it out for Bully of the Year after being nominated for a Stonewall Award today.

Nominees were announced this afternoon for the 2006 ceremony which includes awards recognising the contribution to the gay community of politicians, entertainers and employers as well as bullies and heroes.

The Bully of the Year shortlist includes Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles for repeatedly and deliberately using the word ‘gay’ in a derogatory manner, Sir Iqbal Sacranie, former head of the Muslim Council of Britain, after he used a BBC Radio 4 broadcast to link lesbian and gay people with ‘illness and disease’ and Lowri Turner, a TV presenter and journalist, after using her newspaper column to claim gay people are not fit for public office.

The Archbishop of Westminster Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor also gets a mention after he sacked his press officer because he was gay and was then obliged to pay £20,000 compensation for breaking the law.

Hero of the Year nominees include Adnan Ali, openly gay Muslim and founder of Al Fatiha group for LGB Muslims, Maureen Chadwick, co-founder of shed Productions, who continue to produce gay-friendly TV such as Bad Girls and Waterloo Road and Sheri Dobrowski, the mother of Jody Dobrowski, who spoke out against homophobia after her son’s killers were sentenced to 28 years earlier this year.

famousmales.co.uk has been nominated for Publication of the Year along with lesbian magazine Diva, The Economist, Guardian Unlimited, and The Independent.

Television presenter Paul O’ Grady and actor John Barrowman are among those shortlisted for ‘Entertainer of the Year’ in this year’s awards which are sponsored by Barclays Bank.

Alan Bennett, Sarah Waters and Whitbread Novel Award winner Ali Smith are among those shortlisted as ‘Writer of the Year’.

Labour Peer Waheed Alli, Constitutional Affairs Minister Baroness Ashton and Conservative Party Vice-Chairman Margot James are among those nominated as Politician of the Year.

Ms James told famousmales.co.uk: "I am honoured to be recognised by Stonewall, an organisation for whom I have the greatest respect."

Channel 4 has been nominated in the Broadcaster category in a year which has seen groundbreaking documentaries such as Gay Muslims and dramas such as Sugar Rush.

Jon Snow, presenter of Channel 4 News told famousmales.co.uk: “It’s a great accolade but I think that if any of us are honest we still have a long way to go. There’s still a lot a prejudice even in a channel like ours”

Meanwhile BBC series The Line of Beauty and Waterloo Road both get a mention.

Winners from six categories will be chosen by judges including actor Simon Callow, author Stella Duffy, entertainer Amy Lamé and Lt Cdr Craig Jones of the Royal Navy.

Thousands of Stonewall supporters across Britain are voting for the winners in three other categories - ‘Hero of the Year’, ‘Bully of the Year’ and the ‘Stonewall & Barclays Community Group of the Year’. The successful Community Group will receive a cheque for £5,000.

The winner will be announced at the Royal Academy of Arts on 2 November 2006, hosted by actor Sir Ian McKellen

Oh great he's a bully because he used the word gay :roll:

If it was a real problem surely Aled would have asked him to stop, the word has evolved after all, Gay originally meant happy, prehaps that's what Moyles meant :)

Chris Moyles for repeatedly and deliberately using the word ‘gay’ in a derogatory manner,
Sir Iqbal Sacranie, former head of the Muslim Council of Britain for saying lesbian and gay people with ‘illness and disease’
Lowri Turner, a TV presenter and journalist, claiming gay people are not fit for public office.
The Archbishop of Westminster Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor sacked his press officer because he was gay

3 of these are homophic, one of them isn't. The word "gay" is used to mean "bad" by many many people these days - it may both look and sound like the same word as gay meaning homosexual, but when Chris just copies it probably from some bloke in the pub (or a school child), it's obviously not intentionally derogitory, and I certainly don't think Chris is homophobic. It was probably started by some gay homophobes - the type who are really gay and therefore need to make a fuss about not being gay. Even still, he should have decided not to use the word in it's new (awfully defined) meaning because the people who want to make a fuss will do so, then people who can't think for themselves think he's homophobic.

It's a pathetic excuse to get Chris on the short-list. The other three people are clearly out and out homophobic. Chris is no-where near that league.

Now used to watch it when I was unemployed, even when on days off, however can't be bothered to get up that early to watch it anymore. Plus if she's on there that often I would watch it anyway, dislike her & Lorne Spicer

Aled is probably paid far too much money to "ask him to stop" - he'd probably get booted off the show for disagreeing with Chris.

Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles Voted Bully Of The Year
03 November 2006

John Barrowman, Sugar Rush, Sheri Dobrowski and the Mail on Sunday all won accolades at last nights Stonewall Awards.

Stonewall last night presented its first annual awards at a star-studded ceremony hosted by Sir Ian McKellen at London’s Royal Academy. Sponsored by Barclays, the awards celebrate the positive contributions made by individuals and organisations – both gay and straight - to the lives of gay people in Britain.

The winners were:

* Publication of the Year
Pinknews.co.uk, newly-launched gay news website

* Politician of the Year
Baroness Ashton, Constitutional Affairs Minister and staunch supporter of rights for gay people

* Writer of the Year
Sarah Waters, Booker Prize nominee for her book ‘The Night Watch’

* Employer of the Year
Staffordshire Police

* Bully of the Year
Chris Moyles, Radio 1 DJ who regularly abuses gay people

* Journalist of the Year
Jonathan Oliver, Mail on Sunday reporter who broke the news that the Archbishop of Westminster had sacked his press officer for being gay.

* Broadcast of the Year
Sugar Rush 2, Channel 4

* Stonewall & Barclays Community Group of the Year
The Albert Kennedy Trust, for their work supporting homeless young gay people. Barclays Group Vice Chairman Gary Hoffman presented the Trust with a cheque for £5,000.

* Entertainer of the Year
John Barrowman, most recently seen in ‘Dr Who’, ‘Torchwood’ and ‘How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?’

* Hero of the Year
Sheri Dobrowski, the mother of Jody, who courageously spoke out after her son’s killers were sentenced last June.

John Barrowman, voted Entertainer of the Year, said: “Thank you for this honour. It means a great deal to me to be recognised by my community and peers. Congratulations to the other nominees. We are the few who are proud of who we are and not afraid to talk about it. We are proof that you can be honest and have a great career. I hope others can live by this example.”

Baroness Ashton, voted Politician of the Year, said: “I’m grateful to Stonewall for their help in difficult times in getting legislation through the House of Lords. This award means more to me than you can imagine”.

Sheri Dobrowski, Hero of the Year, said: “Thank you Stonewall for years of fighting for equality and for preparing the way for my children to grow up in a more equal society.”

Three awards – for Hero, Bully and Community Group of the Year - were voted for by Stonewall supporters from across Britain. The other award-winners were selected by a judging panel including actor Simon Callow and author Stella Duffy.

Ben Summerskill, Stonewall chief executive, said: “We’re proud to mark the positive and wide ranging work being done by our award-winners for gay people. We’ll always point out those who try, unsuccessfully, to demean us. But we’re much keener to highlight the efforts of those making a positive effort to support gay equality”.

The 2006 Stonewall Awards were sponsored exclusively by Barclays.

That is far more insulting to Aled than anything Chris has ever said to him. Aled has stated on this forum that if there was any truth at all in the allegations that Chris is homophobic, he would not work with him. And the obvious insults in this post, that Chris is a spoilt, fat, homophobic twat, are nothing in comparison to the implication that Aled is spineless, lacking in integrity, and motivated by fear and money. I think there is a very real possibility that HLG is not very bright at all.

HLG seems to thinks producers are paid an obscene wage, and that they would get sacked for having an opinion.

FFS that is a complete joke and if I were Moyles I would be incredibly pissed off, especially after seeing what the shortlist was.

I can't take those awards seriously after this.

Sir Ian Mccelland the actor chap who was on Parkinson last night set up the stonewall group as I understand it, he seemed ok about Peter Kay, and made the point that Blair has done everything asked by the "gays" to give them legal parity.

Chris could easily be deemed a bully, as he is very immature about getting his own way, threatening to sack people if they don;t agree, telling Dave he;s rubbish / stupid etc, the only thing I am sure of is that it makes no difference whether a victim is gay or a woman or fat or black or ginger, his persona on radio is one off a bully, callers should be aware !

This is probably more appreciated than his Sony ! ( in a funny ironic way )

I gotta say, I am not entirely without experience of the gays, I suspect that some of my boyfriends may actually have been gay and claiming that Moyles is a homophobe is ridiculous, He might be a little childish sometimes but he's hardly up there with our nations greatest haters.

I have not felt offence at one thing Moyles has said, and taken it all with the pinch of salt that Is intended.

Turn off the euro pop, step away from the handbag and get a sense of humour.

I wonder how many of his accusers actually prefer the back door method and how many are just poking their nose in.......so to speak!!!
