It's been announced that Chris is to compere a fundraiser at Liverpool's Empire Theatre in support of jailed Liverpool football fan Michael Shields.

The event will include performances from Gloria Gaynor, Ricky Tomlinson, the Bay City Rollers, The Farm and a special one off reunion show by Atomic Kitten.

The proceeds from the concert will go towards paying off a fine of almost £90,000 which was also imposed by the Bulgarian court on Shields.

The 20-year-old is serving 10 years for the attempted murder of a barman in Bulgaria, but denies the offence.

The fundraiser is in support of Shields, by raising the £90,000 compensation for the victim?

Seems a bit of a controversial thing to be getting involved in. Celebrities trying to support Britains convicted abroad? Hmm indeed.

I don't know if its had any bearing on Chris's involvement, but I think the Shields case is unique in that it is pretty much universally acknowledged - even by the Bulgarian officials - that he is innocent. Its the strangest case I have ever heard about, and I hope there is more going on than we have seen publicly to ensure his release - I'm sure there is.

No it's not.

Without going into the details, there's quite a bit of evidence on both sides to prove him innocent/guilty. It's no where near as clear cut as it being universally acknowledged - especially buy the Bulgarian officials - that he is innocent. That's why it's controversial that Celebs are getting involved.

If it was so clear cut I don't think they'd need to get involved.

There's more to it than that, and whilst the person I know who is working on the case is obviously not going to tell me the details, I don't see any reason to disbelieve the bits she IS able to tell me. The only thing that isn't clear cut is the beaurocracy involved in reversing a decision of the Bulgarian court, which is apparently more complex than....than.....than a really big bag of complex things. At least, this is what I have been told by one of the barristers who is working on the case. For free.

It is by no means clear cut that he is innocent.

My mole on the inside is far too professional to tell me anything more - I wish she would!

But, to actually get back to the theme of this thread (most unlike me.....) - even if he is, as I believe to be largely accepted (other opinions on this matter are also available) innocent, how ethical (can't think of a better word, but I'm sure there is one) is it for people like Chris to front this kind of event? Fact is, Shields has been convicted, and whatever the intricacies of the legal system in Bulgaria, it is a legal and valid conviction, even if it is possibly also a wrong one. But surely at the end of the day anyone who believes that Mr Shields is innocent can publicly support his cause if they choose. Is Chris doing anything more than this?

In Bag of Pooh's absence.

This is all a publicity stunt, and Moyles is being "donated" with a new Audi TT for his trouble.

Chris Moyles is about as altruistic as a really money grabbing selfish person could be.

Not that that's a bad thing, of cource.

As for the poor chap in the bum bum prison, he should be transfered to a UK prison pending his appeal, better quality of man rape here ( contraception provided !)

That was the basic thrust of BforB's postcard I think

I have to agree - it didn't seem quite right.......has Chris said anything about it on the show? I would have thought if something blatantly untrue was being attributed to him on this site or anywhere else, he would have known about it, and mentioned it?
