why do people feel the need to be outraged for other people?

If I found something about another person outrageous, I would be outraged. Personally I don't think I could be outraged by anything so impersonal as a radio presenter, unless they were talking directly to and about me personally, but maybe that's not how most people feel. I would agree with nicola_red that Scott Mills pretending to be straight is annoying and unneccesary, and not funny. Which is pretty much what she said, I think. But all of that is a long way from being outraged by it. I mean, if I didn't listen, and have an opinion about what was being said, why would I bother to put the radio on in the first place?

When has Scott ever pretended to be straight? I'm straight, but girls sometimes ask me if a bloke is good looking or not, and I respond accordingly. Surely Scott is only doing the same thing about girls, even though he may not fancy them?

At least twice in the past week I've heard Mills discuss the possibility of him meeting and marrying girls. The one that sticks in the mind is him saying how much he liked Romy & Michelle and how if he met a girl who loved it as much he'd marry them. Then a caller came on and said she did and he discussed them getting married. I'm not just talking about him saying girls are good looking.

And I never mentioned being outraged - I said it annoyed me. I do see the point about if he's that annoying don't listen, and I have pretty much given up on the breakfast show til Moyles returns.

The comment about being outraged on behalf of others is interesting - how do you know I'm not gay?...

what really winds me up about Mills is the way he feels the need to be faux-straight and discuss meeting girls etc. I realise it's meant to be an 'in joke', but I think it could be interpreted as a bit insulting to gay people that he won't speak openly about it in the same way Aled does

I wouldn't really say it's an in-joke. More like it's a pretty out-joke. Intelligent people can work out from listening to the show that he's gay. The fact the whole team is normally in hysterics when Scott jokes about meeting a girls is kinda a big give away.

He's not pretending to be straight. Even if he was how would that offend gay people? Surely saying that gay people have to explicitly mention they are gay so not to offend other gay people is more offensive.

When Chris mentions sleeping with guys, mainly Robbie Williams, should straight people be offended?

I can't honestly believe that there's a single person out there who still thinks Mills is straight...

I'd put it in the same context as I guy I work with who's a muslim and during Ramadan whenever I would ask what people wanted for lunch as I did the lunch runs he would often reply "I'll have the bacon and sausage burger" it's not very funny on it's own but knowing him and knowing he's a muslim and that it was during ramadan made the whole thing very funny (well in my office we thought so anyway)

So Scott saying "If I met a girl...I'm marry her" to me is funny, but maybe that's just me.

Yes and people from Gillingham in Kent are extremely well endowed as a rule also. Which only slighty makes up for the fact they greet you with "watcha!"

It's not important whether a radio presenter is gay or straight in principle. If you read the original post that wasn't my point at all. It's the pretence that irritated me, whether it's meant as a joke or in seriousness.

Thank goodness he's back on afternoons now where I can avoid the show altogether.
